  1. Looking at all the recently unearthed videos, I honestly think John was on the path to embrace conservative values, unfortunately, “Imagine” is satanic values packaged for the great unwashed at their finest.

  2. While musically talented John Lennon was socio-politically retarded…and had many traits of a communist. Even if told
he was about to be shot and offered a gun it’s a virtual certainty
he would not have accepted it. NONE of the Beatles at that time were anything remotely conservative. The two surviving ones might possibly be considered ‘middle of the road’ now but not then.

  3. Imagine there’s no liberals
Its not easy but please try
No one to take your weapons
    while they just get high
imagine all the babies that would be alive today

you might say I’m a dreamer
I may be the only one
I hope one day you’ll wake up
and realize you need a gun

  4. I read his Playboy interview (as a 12 yr old! Yep, I just read it for the articles LOL) and I remember something about his being upset about America wasting billions of dollars on 3rd World shit holes. As a 12 yr old who was still pissed at the Iran hostage bullshit, I was impressed by that.

  5. I’ve read a couple of articles to that effect as well. I actually love most of Lennon’s music, with the notable exception of “Imagine,” which I despise to my very marrow.

Also “I Will,” I guess a Paul song, I think is notable in how it is under appreciated. It’s a lovely song, a few notes difficult for me to reach (I LOVE to sing but don’t have a great voice), but beautiful.

By the way, on Thanksgiving my 12-year-old boy and I kicked total ass on Beatles karaoke.

  6. Probably just me, but it seems the Beatles were the start of asking entertainers their opinion on weighty world issues and now people like rosie o’ and penn think they are intelligent, too.

  7. Like many great musicians, it was important to John that his politics not be old fashioned. As a ute, he read the complete works of Winston (his middle name, before changing it to Ono) Churchill, and CS Lewis. I agree that as he got older, he was probably becoming conflicted. We all, mostly, become more conservative as we get older. Keep in mind he was only 40 when he was killed. He had attained unbelievable fame and fortune by the age of 24, then about five years of very heavy drug use. So figure by about 35 (1975) he’s resumed a normal life. He was a devoted father to Sean at the time, and you never heard about him treating fans poorly. As far as Yoko is concerned, John really wanted to be with her, from what I’ve read. I wish he or Yoko had been carrying 35 years ago.

    A few great ones:
    If I Fell
    All I’ve Got to Do
    Rain
    Strawberry Fields Forever
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
    I Am the Walrus
    In My Life
Good Morning, Good Morning (turn the balance all the way to the right speaker, and you hear the saxophone section without any other instruments. Amazing arrangement by George Martin, and what an amazing sound!)

    A couple duds:
    Imagine
    Working Class Hero
    Mother
The entire Rock and Roll album (Phil Spector is equally at fault here.)

I wonder how many outwardly anti-gun celebrities nowadays actually carry or have armed bodyguards.

    Gone way too soon.

  8. I cannot lie. As a young musician John Lennon and the Beatles were a huge influence on me. Over the years I’ve managed to expunge any political influence that they might have had but most of their musical influence remains. It is my opinion that they are the greatest pop group and most prolific songwriters of all time. So there – – NYAH!

  9. He made it kind of hard to Imagine him going to heaven.

Even though he was one of the most successful song writers of all time, Lennon had really, really bad taste in women. He could have had his pick out of thousands of screaming fans. Why that one? LSD?

  10. I agree, Billyfuster. If you only listen to conservative musicians, it’s way too limiting. I prefer to listen to what I like, and if their politics suck (more often than not), it’s only the music I like.
