A rare 4.1 magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Tennessee Saturday morning and was felt more than 250 miles away in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The quake originated near the small town of Greenback, Tennessee, about 30 miles southwest of Knoxville, at 9:04 am, according to the US Geological Survey.
The USGS reported the tremor had a depth of almost 25 miles, making it a shallow earthquake, which is anything less than 43 miles below ground.
Thousands of people in the area reported feeling the vibrations, most lightly, to the USGS, including in North and South Carolina and Georgia.
“First ever earthquake you could actually feel in Atlanta,” one X user posted. “Whole place shook for nearly 10 seconds. Absolutely nuts.” MORE
Are we sure there wasn’t a concert nearby where Metallica was playing “Enter the Sandman”?
Yep, I think it’s the 50th tremor in the last 9 months.
A friend who lives in the area posted that it was upgraded later to 5 point something.
A longtime friend moved last year to N Carolina.
They got there a week and a half before the flood. Since then there’s been wildfires and now this.
What a way to start retirement.
Nothing like a serious S. California shaker. Glad to not have to face those anymore.
I’m about 40 miles east of Atlanta. This is news to me. I experienced an earthquake once, many years ago in Mentor, Ohio. A minor one . I don’t know how to describe it.
