Hilarious Update – Is the New Roy Orbison Tour Cool or Creepy?

Orbison, who died in 1988, is on tour as a hologram, performing with a live orchestra.

UPDATE: I was just talking to Irony Curtain and the subject of this concert series came up. He said, “it’s neither cool nor creepy. The thing that I found stupid is that it’s not Roy Orbison. It’s a body double.”

I didn’t know that and immediately I could not stop laughing.

Why in the world would you make a hologram of someone else as Roy Orbison? Why not just have the guy out on the stage lip-synching? The hologram seems like an unnecessary step.

Of course we began riffing on a possible television commercial —>

(Typical New Yorker woman) “It was amazing. It was as if his body double was right there in the room with me.”

“Squinting a little helped the illusion. Then it felt exactly like I was at a Roy Orbison concert, with macular degeneration.”

The best reason for this concert tour being a hologram, that we can think of, is that they don’t have to pay the fake Roy Orbison more than once.

Cool or Creepy? Neither. It’s Cheapy.

With the close-up picture I can clearly see this is not Roy Orbison.

Some people have commented on social media that they find the whole idea to be morbid and creepy; I went into it with an open mind and thought well, if it does turn out to be a bit creepy it is near Halloween so this is also probably the closest I’ll get to actually seeing a ghost.

When the show started and the hologram of Orbison rose up out of the stage it looked incredible; there were a lot of audible gasps in the room above the sound of the live orchestra playing “Only The Lonely” along with the recorded singing voice of Orbison matched up with the hologram. It is an amazing visual effect and it felt like an actual resurrection for a moment. It didn’t seem too morbid or creepy to me; it felt more like some cool yet slightly weird show you would see at Disney World, or perhaps more accurately a big Las Vegas casino.

There were several other little touches that added to the coolness of it all, such as the Orbison hologram turning his back to the audience before a song would start like he was interacting with the live orchestra.

Now what would be really cool is if someone can come up with the technology that allows you to play something like this in your living room at home.

  1. In real life Roy Orbison was kinda creepy, anyway.

    I can’t remember who said it, but the best comment I ever heard about him was, “If Elvis was the King of rock and roll, then Roy Orbison was its Dark Prince”.

  8. You don’t have to be dead to use a hologram. In India, they use holograms of live politicians to campaign around the country.

    In fact, India is so technologically advanced, everyone has a voter ID card.

  9. I stated fifteen years ago that this technology would take over live entertainment. When they get it down you can go to concert venues and even clubs to see the Beatles, Beach Boys, Michael Jackson, whoever. Hologram television will come later and then you will be able to have personal concerts. Real soon they will have vocal effects you can buy to “convert” your voice to anyone. The only thing holding this back is working out the licensing.

  11. @joe6pk, too much technology. We will get to the point where we wont be able to discern real from false. Believe it or not, the book of Revelation warns of deceiving even the elect and I am beginning to think this tech is how it will happen

  12. I went to this concert in Denver and it was actually really cool to see. If you had just stumbled in off of the street you would have thought he was alive and well and on stage. I enjoyed it.

  18. Perhaps alone here, but I am a Roy fan. Do not know anything about his politics, nor do I care. He was wonderful in his range as well as his strangeness. I gifted a copy of “Black and White Night” to a long time friend whose wife called me the evening he received it and told me he wept. My Daddy was a Roy fan and I do not think that I ever once saw him (Pop) listening to music.
    I am glad that Roy lived and sorry that he (and Daddy) died too soon.

  19. @Crackerbaby ~ Roy fan here too … he was creepy strange, but that voice can still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up … like Danny Gatton’s guitar playing (another troubled soul that was taken too soon)

  22. Result of a generation raised on the Kardashians, suddenly impressed by a hologram of a fake Roy Orbison… *sigh*
    Did your question, ‘cool or creepy’ refer to the audience or to the show? Or is it the same thing?
    Sorry, I’m a fan of live music in local joints.
