The science is settled.
That was the most modern technology of the times. I’m surprised it is as accurate as it is considering it was mapped out while riding in sailing ships that had to zig-zag against the winds in order to move, their orientation was based on the assumption the compass was pointing to “true’ north and not the magnetic pole, and their speed was measured by throwing a buoy overboard and counting how long it took the ship to pass it.
Also, the leaders of countries surly bribed these map makers to give themselves political advantages. Just like the bastards today who use computers and the internet to steal elections.
