Independent Chronicle: Children in New Zealand are falling ill in high numbers following the countries strict COVID-19 lockdowns, which have created an effect called “immunity debt.”
Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, has 46 children in hospitals being treated for respiratory illnesses, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Wards across the nation have become overwhelmed with babies and young children infected with a new respiratory virus, medical professionals say.
The surge has strained hospital resources, prompting surgeries to be delayed and rooms to be converted into treatment spaces.
RSV usually only presents mild symptoms in adults but is far more threatening when infecting children and can even be fatal. New Zealand has seen nearly 1,000 new cases of RSV in the last five weeks, according to the Institute of Environmental Science and Research. An average of 1,743 cases is normal over the 29-week winter season. more here
