Copper Thieves Cause Widespread Internet Power Outage in Southern California

Legal Insurrection– Last year, I noted that between the escalating price of copper and organized crime, copper theft was becoming a significant issue. Interestingly, one of the hardest hit groups are electric vehicle owners, as charging stations are often a target of metal thieves.

Copper theft has become a major and growing problem across California, with Los Angeles and Ventura County experiencing frequent and increasingly disruptive incidents. Thieves target copper wiring from public infrastructure, utilities, and telecommunications, causing widespread outages, safety hazards, and costly repairs.

This weekend, for example, the metal theft incident led to a widespread internet outage.

An attempted — and unsuccessful — copper theft in Van Nuys caused a widespread internet outage Sunday affecting swaths of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, a Spectrum spokesman confirmed to The Times.

  1. The bastards jerk the wire out of traffic signals. Catch and hang the bastards with the stolen wire and it will stop this before an entire family is killed in a Tbone collision

  2. Several years ago, Southern California had a wide spread black out on a Saturday that shut down the electrical grid for four hours. I had a project I was working on, and had to leave the office because none of the computers or office machines were functioning. Elevators were out and it was a 10 story walk down the fire stairs to leave the building – I couldn’t get back in if I wanted because access was via card key. I had to prop up the parking garage gate to get my car out. A normal 30 minute commute home took over an hour even though there was no traffic – people did not know how to drive without stop lights. Stores were closed because the registers were electric, and most of the clerks could not make change manually if they were so inclined anyway. Gas pumps operate electrically – I fortunately did not need gas. Air conditioning did not work, and if the outage had lasted a long time, food in refrigerators and freezers would have started spoiling. And – horrors of horrors – the pump for my jacuzzi jets and heater weren’t working.

Modern society is dependent upon electricity, and if that electrical supply is disrupted things shut down. Most people do not have back-up generators, and the power grid is extremely vulnerable in many, if not most areas. Fortunately, this power outage occurred during the day so people weren’t fumbling around in the dark, but as California moves to a system that is more and more dependent on electricity, including for transportation, this could be a potential for disaster.

  3. What was the single most important technological advance the human race made? Utilizing fire. And second? Harnessing the uses of electricity. Bar none, that is the order of things. I think the thieves ought to have a freaking field day in each and every communistic community. Go thieves, tear it all down so we can rebuild… without you and without your enablers the demorats… and RINOs.
