In older, equally amusing news, the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, were famously defeated by Karsten Braasch, an aging male tennis player who was ranked 203rd at the time. He challenged the sisters after they claimed they could beat any male player ranked outside the top 200. He handily defeated both Venus and Serena in matches that took place during the 1998 Australian Open.
Braasch’s victory was attributed to his physical advantages, such as being able to chase down shots and generate more spin on the ball, which the female players found difficult to handle. It is worth noting that Braasch’s training regimen was not typical of a professional athlete, as he was known to smoke a pack of cigarettes per day and consume alcohol.
