A federal judge has stripped the city of control over its notorious Rikers Island jail complex, citing “unprecedented” levels of violence, systemic mismanagement, and a blatant disregard for court orders.
In a scathing 77-page ruling released Tuesday, Chief U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain officially stripped New York City and its Department of Correction (DOC) of full control over Rikers Island, citing a decade of failure to protect inmates from “grave and immediate” harm, including unconstitutional levels of violence, abuse, and systemic mismanagement.
The ruling, issued in the landmark Nunez v. City of New York case, appoints an independent “Nunez Remediation Manager” to take control over key safety and use-of-force functions at Rikers.
The decision comes after Judge Swain previously found the City in civil contempt of 18 separate provisions of the Consent Judgment and multiple court orders dating back to 2015. more
“…including unconstitutional levels of violence, abuse, and systemic mismanagement.”
So, she’s saying that there is a constitutional level of violence, abuse, and systematic mismanagement?
No immediate resolutions come to mind that don’t begin at confining everyone to their cells for the entire day. No breakthrough ideas here, just that jail is punishment and there is negligible rehabilitation taking place so stop playing at it.

Think J6 incarceration with no charges and no trial.
Albany leadership run’s all of NY State the same way…into the ground. Just patter to impress the sheep that vote. They are great at finding new taxes but that’s about all they do.
i have often said that while on returning flight to Laguardia airport if i were to ever be involved in a plane crash please le it crash into Rikers island. we’d go out in a ball of flames but also do plenty of good on the way outta this world
