Liberal State Supreme Court Holds WI Dem Gov Can Use Veto Powers to Increase School Funding for the Next 400 Years

The Wisconsin governor’s creative use of his uniquely powerful veto to lock in a school funding increase for 400 years may be “attention grabbing,” but it was constitutional, the state Supreme Court ruled Friday.

The 4-3 ruling from the liberal-controlled court affirms the partial veto power of Wisconsin governors, which is the broadest of any state. Both Republicans and Democrats have used the partial veto to reshape spending bills passed by the Legislature.

Wisconsin is the only state where governors can partially veto spending bills by striking words, numbers and punctuation to create new meaning or spending amounts. In most states, governors can only eliminate or reduce spending amounts.

Democratic Gov. Tony Evers told lawmakers at the time that changing the year 2025 to 2425 in the budget was meant to increase school districts’ funding “in perpetuity.” More

The original bill called for a per student increase this year of $325 per student. Allowing this abuse of veto powers means next year the per student funding goes to $650 and the year after that $975 the year after that and so on and so forth for the next 400 years or until a legislature or governor passes a new budget or rescinded this stupidity. – Dr. Tar

  1. No, this is beyond override. This is clearly not legal, and the State Supreme Court must rule as such. Otherwise any governor can rewrite any bill that the legislators have passed into something that doesn’t even resemble what it was when it arrived at his desk. And I can’t imagine that the state constitution would allow for a governor to increase expenditures in any way, only legislators can do that.
Of course if the state supreme court has a leftist majority they will likely just allow it. Leaving the citizens two options: revolt; or relocate.

  2. Sorry, I didn’t read to closely. The supreme court did exactly what I expected, ruled in agreement because they are leftists. I thought I had heard this story a while ago, the governor rewriting the law. Yep, if you live in WI you had better start looking elsewhere.
