Methane plumes were recently found in vast numbers off the Atlantic coast during a recent survey, overhauling previously held notions about what’s under the ocean floor.
“It was a surprise to find these features,” said lead study author Adam Skarke, a geologist at Mississippi State University. His team’s findings were published Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience, The Huffington Post reported. “It was unexpected because many of the common things associated with methane gas do not exist on the Atlantic margin.”
About 570 so-called methane seeps were found by multibeam sonar and video gathered by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration from 2011 to 2013. Most were found to be between 800 and 2,000 feet deep. The number of plumes found is surprising, given that, previously, only three natural gas seeps had been identified off the Atlantic coast.

This is why modern science is so suspect in so many people’s eys. Many of the common things ASSSUMED TO BE associated with methane gas do not exist on the atlantic margin, or were not found on the atlantic margin until now. When new information is discovered, hypotheses and theories must be accordingly revised, or it’s not science.
I have an idea. Drill holes in these seeps, tap and cap the pipes, then sell the gas! Here’s the great part. If a pipe bursts you don’t have to worry because that gas was already escaping naturally so nothing will have changed.
The ‘tards won’t get that, though.
@Gryph, how about, once “the science is settled,” facts that support the contrary will be either discarded or will be revised in accordance to settled science, not based on actual research.
Has anyone yet written a book about how settled science has changed through the ages? They could start with the flat earth “science” and work forward.
If we just raised taxes enough, the gubmint could stop these leaks… or at least put together a panel that could release a report blaming it on white, male, Christian conservatives whose racism, sexism, and homophobia caused Mother Gaia to cry methane tears.
