Mexico Sues Google over Gulf of America: They Want Their Name Back

Breitbart:

The Gulf of America may be facing an identity crisis in Google maps after Mexico filed suit this week against the tech giant for changing the name of the body of water.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the lawsuit on Friday and wants the oceanic region’s name restored to the Gulf of Mexico. President Donald Trump changed the name with an executive order as one of his first pieces of business when he took office for the second time.

The order reportedly only carries authority within the United States.

Sheinbaum threatened to sue Google in February. She provided no details in Friday’s announcement in terms of the legal basis for the suit.

In February, however, the Mexican president argued that Trump’s name change decree should be restricted to the “continental shelf of the United States” because Mexico still controls much of the Gulf.

“We have sovereignty over our continental shelf,” she said at the time.

Mexico’s Foreign Relations Ministry has also been hitting Google with letters that urged its map service not to relabel the body of water. more here

  1. It seems bad enough a single person gets ‘butt-hurt’ now an entire country gets ‘butt-hurt’.

Let me check my field of ‘give-a-fucks’…..
Poor bastards, no one says THEY have to use the same name.

    Go cry us a river.

  2. “We have sovereignty over our continental shelf”

    SAYS WHO?

YOU USED TO HAVE SOVEREIGNTY OVER A VAST SECTION OF OUR WESTERN STATES, BUT WE FIXED THAT IN THE MID-1800S BECAUSE WE KNEW MEXICO WOULD TURN IT INTO A SHITHOLE, AND WE HAD MORE USEFUL PLANS FOR IT

  3. What a load of mierda. The Mexicans seem not even to know what to complain about.

I use a VPN. This lets me choose where in the world I appear to be. I usually appear to be in Tampa FL, an hour or two north of where I live.

So, I normally appear to ‘net services to be in the U.S. When I connect to Google Maps and look off the west coast of Florida, that body of water is identified as the Gulf of America.

But when I choose to appear to be in Mexico (this takes literally three mouse clicks and less than 5 seconds) and navigate to a fresh instance of Google Maps, that body of water shows up as the Gulf of Mexico.

Americans see ‘America’ and Mexicans see ‘Mexico’. So what’s the beef?

  4. @Tim — There’s an awful lot of Gulf of America coastline from Matamoros to Cancún. And an awful lot of Gulf of America coastline from Boca Chica to Key West. We both have good basis for a claim, and I don’t see why the Mexicans can’t call it whatever they like and we do the same.

Or how about Golfo de los Malditos Gobiernos?

  5. Really stupid, “We have sovereignty over our continental shelf” And we have sovereignty over what we want to name geographical areas. How about Gulf of XYZ? Fuck off. And by the way, no more money for your sub cultural of human beans. LOL get it, BEANS. OK, good night.

  6. Claudia – To your point, since Trump is “Hitler” why didn’t he re-name it “The Gulf of the United States”
    Hmmmmmmmm?

Of course they want to make a big stink about cuz that’s all they can do. Mexico, and the Gulf, is part of the North American Continent, but I guess to call it that is just too inclusive for them… just when you thot Inclusivity was their mantra!
