In the off chance you’re planning to sail your private yacht in the Mediterranean sometime soon, you’d better look out for orcas.

Footage has gone viral of a killer whale attacking a large sailing yacht near Barbate, Spain, and the Strait of Gibraltar earlier this month. Ilona Skorobogatova captured video of the whale following the boat then repeatedly ramming into the vessel from the side. Later, the animal swims underneath the boat and slaps it from the bottom. more

    Of no importance: I have not heard the name Ilona (Eee-LOH-nah) in such a long time. Always thought it was pretty.

  3. @MJA — Ilona Massey was a well-known actress when I was a boy. Screen, stage, and for a while had her own TV show. IIRC, she was in Frankenstein Meets Wolfman.

    And as for those orcas, I remember reading about this as a new ‘thing’ a year or more ago. So, they’re still at it, eh? Somebody must’ve pissed ’em off really bad. I wonder who/what? Y’all do know that orcas have larger and more complex brains than humans, right?

  6. Al, i certainly hope they have bigger brains than humans, those guys are like 30ft long. then again, doesn’t really matter. i have a huge head and according to my old man he can hear a pebble rattling around

    I read sometime ago that a calf in a pod got propped by some very large vessel and that pod started attacking vessels. There’s evidence that that one pod has since trained other pods to attack man made floating shit. Let’s hope they don’t get their fins on any nukes.

    It just occurred to me that although far-fetched it isn’t extremely far-fetched to think that orcas and other cetaceans could learn to detach anti-ship mines from their tethers and tow them into the path of some 5,000 passenger mega-cruise-ship. KA-BOOM! That way the orcas could watch from a fairly close but safe distance and clap-clap-clap their little fins. OK, maybe I’m thinking of clapping seals. But grown-up harp seals have a hell of a gripe with humans, too.
