Trump pardons ranchers whose arrests led to armed occupation of wildlife refuge

Fox News: President Trump on Tuesday pardoned the father and son ranchers from Oregon whose imprisonment for setting fires on federal land sparked a 41-day takeover of a wildlife refuge in the state.

Trump signed the order granting clemency to 76-year-old Dwight Hammond and his son, Steven Hammond, 49, who were convicted of arson in 2012 for fires that burned on federal land in 2001 and 2006.

Though they served their original sentences for the conviction — Dwight serving three months, Steven serving one year — an appellate judge ruled in 2015 that the terms were too short under federal minimum sentencing laws and the Hammonds were resentenced to serve the mandatory minimum. This decision led to the 2016 protests.

“The Hammonds are multi-generation cattle ranchers in Oregon imprisoned in connection with a fire that leaked onto a small portion of neighboring public grazing land,” the White House said in a statement. “The evidence at trial regarding the Hammonds’ responsibility for the fire was conflicting, and the jury acquitted them on most of the charges.”

The statement added: “Justice is overdue for Dwight and Steven Hammond, both of whom are entirely deserving of these Grants of Executive Clemency.”

  1. These guys were railroaded by an over aggressive federal government that exceeded all reasonable authority. I’m glad these guys have been pardoned!

  2. @joe6pak – Amen, brother.

I’m really glad DJT pardoned the Hammonds because
    a) It helps to correct a gross injustice,
    b) It might discourage similar overreach in future, and
    c) It’ll reall piss off arrogant fed govt bureaudespots.

  3. You think the illegal anarchist who burned all that land in Colorado will serve as much time?
It’s getting to the point where you have to wonder when:

  4. The usual suspects in Freeattle and Protestland are losing their Goddamned minds over this. One of those being interviewed said: It’s not fair. It’s like Trump just took a broomstick and beat a hornet nest that was hanging over our head like a pinata and then walked away laughing about it.

  7. Isn’t it awesome to have a POTUS with the guts to do what’s right instead of what the establishment elites tell him to do?

Oh… I certainly hope not. It would be a far brighter world without all those black flags blotting out the loverly clouds. And… The sunshine makes it easier to step over all those robberies hone awry, where nothing of value was taken, without getting my shoes all icky.

  9. Remember it was Kate Brown who insisted they pull the trigger on LaVoy Finicum and that FBI Agent Bretzing was in charge.
Barry’s fingerprints were all over this one, remember his comment that he was “pretty good at killing people”?
May these Agents rot for at least as long as their victims, and remember Finicum.

  10. There are still several people who showed up to stand with them who have been sentenced to serious jail time.

26 others were charged. Blaine Cooper. Jason Patrick. O’Shaunnessy.

Some up to three yeara in jail by a political prosecutor doing Obama’s dirty work.

Eric Holder had an armed takeover of an ROTC building at Columbia U. and got to be an attorney general.

  11. A controlled burn that went slightly over their border onto federal land and the feds were just waiting. They were trying to force them off their land and the feds wanted it so they used thug tactics.
These guys really got shafted bigtime. I hope they’re able to file counter charges.
