On Monday, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed the Tools to Address Known Exploitation by Immobilizing Technological Deepfakes on Websites and Networks Act, known as the TAKE IT DOWN Act, by a 409-2 vote. The bill was introduced by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) in the Senate and brought to the House by Representative Maria Salazar (R-FL).
First Lady Melania Trump, who does not weigh in on public policy often, is a vocal supporter of the bill. In March, she hosted a roundtable on deepfake and revenge porn to advocate for the passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act.

There was a time when one could see their argument against such a bill. That was a long, long time ago. Now we’re way past allowing the market or town square to decide and correct this kind of thing.
I’m old school I guess. Women belong on a pedestal. If some dickless little cowards decides to take revenge on a woman by posting shit on line for the world to see, that woman’s family members deserve the right to beat the crap out of the offender. Televised. Maybe pay for view.
This is an issue I admittedly flip-flopped on. The deep fakes are so good now it is virtually impossible to tell the fake photos from real photos, whereas in the past it was fairly easy to spot a photoshop. This type of activity has usually been actionable after the fact as defamation, but now the damage, frequently lasting, is done as soon as the fakes are posted on the internet.
I am a big First Amendment guy, but the internet and AI is making it harder and harder to put up with this type of fraudulent activity.

@Benito: good point, but I don’t look for these types of photos. I’m not really concerned about celebrities – I am not all that familiar with modern celebrities anyway – but with the rise of revenge porn frequently done with photoshop and AI depicting private individuals and sometimes younger females.
For the record, I don’t look for these pictures either. But I do hear the complaints of parents and law enforcement about these things.
