In the latest twist of remaking Western civilization history, Jorge Pisa Sanchez wrote in National Geographic’s History magazine that “environmental disasters and devastating epidemics triggered the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the late fifth century.” So “plagues and climate change” were the culprits for the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
Bacteria and Viruses, Volcanoes, and Solar Cycles
The source of this new twist is Kyle Harper, a classics professor at the University of Oklahoma. In 2017, he [offered] “an ambitious synthesis on the causes of the empire’s decline.” He argued that “the fate of Rome was played out by emperors and barbarians, senators and generals, soldiers, and slaves. But it was equally decided by bacteria and viruses, volcanoes, and solar cycles.”
As proof, the article cites the Antonine plague (165-180 A.D.), the Cyprian plague (circa 249-269 A.D.), and droughts in the Mediterranean (368-369 A.D.) caused by climate shifts.
Harper drew conclusions from “data from climatology and epidemiology.” The article does not explain how and where this data came from. The Roman Climate Optimum is “believed to have lasted from circa 550 B.C. to 150 A.D.” What this belief is based on is not explained. more
The whole damn Global Warming charade is nothing but sucker bait.
Not content with their nearly unbroken string of modern inaccuracies, the prophets of climate doom now seek to work their magic on ancient history as well.
Let’s face it, they came up with the ultimate con they can milk for ever and by the time mankind can disprove it in a court of law, they will have robbed us blind and be long gone!
The belief is based on nothing more than feelings.
I have been learning about the bronze age collapse which occurred fairly rapidly around 1200 B.C. During the bronze age collapse, the Mycenean Empire and the Hittite Empire collapsed, as well as several city states, and the Assyrian and Egyptian empires sustained significant decline. The full extent of the bronze age collapse is still being debated, but it is acknowledged by most experts that the collapse was fairly widespread for the time.
As to causation, many archeologists do list climate change as one of many concurrent causes – there is evidence of widespread drought and famine. However, there are many other causal factors as well: invasion/piracy by the mysterious “Sea Peoples,” earthquake and volcano activity, political unrest and revolts, plagues and disease, disruption of economic trade activity, and the predilection of the Hittites and Myceneans towards driving large SUVs instead of more environmentally friendly EVs. (I may be imagining the last factor).
With regard to climate change, this appears to be one of many factors which could have led to the bronze age collapse, and many historians hypothesize that this collapse resulted from a “perfect storm” of numerous factors. Climate change has been occurring on earth ever since the earth was formed, and given the earth’s total population and the lack of modern technology, it does not appear that any such climate change was man made, or at least significantly influenced by human activity. As a result, it is possible that some amount of climate change may have been some factor in the collapse of the Roman empire (for example the migration of Germanic peoples south), but there were a myriad of other factors – internal and external – which led to this collapse.
If globull warming and climate change was bull shit back than its still bullshit now. The bullshit is never ending and a failure every time its foisted upon a gullible public to believe their damned lies about globull warming. Chicken Little was wrong, the sky is not falling.
I understand there’s a record heat wave in the Eastern U.S. How soon before Pres Trump is blamed for this ??
Trump will be blamed for it yesterday because he didn’t take action soon enough to end globull warming.
The most spectacular climate change event ever is recorded in the Book of Genesis and was indeed man caused.
Today – not so much!
The Western Roman empire fell because it was taken over by weak, self-indulgent, degenerate fucktards who relied on mercenaries to protect their country. The mercenaries soon figured out it was easier to sack their hosts than adopt their foolish and silly ways.
Roman grain: “Grain Sources: Primarily sourced from provinces such as Egypt, North Africa, and Sicily.”.
I’d say especially Egypt, with its very fertile banks along the Nile. Sicily for sure. North Africa…yes, along the southern Med. coastline, maybe. The Globullers say NA used to be fertile, but because of GW, it is all desert now. I don’t believe the northern Sahara was any place to grow wheat at all, ever. The coastal strip of Morocco to Libya to Egypt, perhaps, but not the Sahara desert.
Nothing much can grow naturally in the Sahara. That’s my opinion, only. It may not be correct, but it’s my opinion for now.
@The Mule
Yes sir, I believe you are correct. Visigoths are responsible for the final blow to the Roman Empire. Seeing pictures of the ruins of the once great empire make me feel a bit sad.
There has been climate change as long as their has been a climate but it don’t have a thing to do with human activity. Did the Romans use of the internal combustion engine cause the changes in their time???? and what about that time the Irish almost starved to death during the little ice-age? That was 17th century. Was it their farting cows that cause it??? DUH!!
His parents outta’ be ashamed of this peckerhead they let grow up,,,, he damned sure wasn’t raised.
