The Village People Are Sick Of YMCA Being Called A ‘Gay Anthem.’ They’re Going To Start Suing Over It

Daily Caller –

Victor Willis, the lead singer and songwriter of the Village People, clarified that their hit song, “Y.M.C.A.,” was not a gay anthem, and that his wife will pursue legal action against anyone perpetuating the claim.

Willis thanked President-elect Donald Trump for reviving the song’s popularity in a lengthy Facebook post Monday, noting its rise to the top of the charts after Trump used the song in his presidential campaign. The singer also expressed frustration over the persistent “misguided” framing of the song as pro-gay propaganda.

“Come January 2025, my wife will start suing each and every news organization that falsely refers to Y.M.C.A., either in their headlines or alluded to in the base of the story, that Y.M.C.A. is somehow a gay anthem,” Willis wrote in the Facebook post. more here

  1. “Come January 2025, my wife (whose name is George and fills out a mean set of speedos) will start suing each and every news organization that falsely refers to Y.M.C.A.”

  2. Well if it wasn’t gay it sure as hell was festive. I always figured the only reasons Trump picked that song was it’s easy for old guys to dance too and he was reaching out to the gay community as a side bonus.
But in all honesty it is a catchy little tune.

  3. I’ve watched a lot of people of all stripes having fun dancing to it for a lot of years, and it is a catchy song. I’m good with it no matter what political spin some people want to put on it.

  4. My kids’ elementary school music teacher taught them the overhead hand signals and they LOVED the song! that was many moons ago but song is TIMELESS and was great choice!

  5. I get a big kick out of arguments between song writers and fans over what the meaning of a particular song is – that happens quite a bit. When song writers write lyrics, it’s a lot like poetry in that there is a lot of imagery which is subject to interpretation. But song writers should be happy when people get something out of a song – even if it’s not what the song writer intended.

  6. This Victor Willis guy is tiresome. He waited almost 40 years to get in a twist over whether or not his song is a gay anthem? Nobody cares if it is or not, but you can’t blame anyone for thinking that it is after seeing the original Village People costumes and their dancing to Y.M.C.A.

He’s milking his song’s renewed popularity for all it’s worth. I read that in 2019 he was lawyering up to have Trump stop using his song at his rallies but, apparently, there is such a thing as a “rally license” that had been duly paid by the campaign long ago. He was no fan of Trump.

The eye roll for me was when asked if he would play at the inauguration, he said he’d “..have to seriously consider it.” Really? He’d have to “seriously consider it”? Oh, please, spare us. It would be an amazing honor, and he knows it.

  7. AbigailAdams, a million thumbs up.

“As I’ve said numerous times in the past, that is a false assumption based on the fact that my writing partner was gay, and some (not all) of Village People were gay, and that the first Village People album was totally about gay life…”

  8. Maybe it was intended as a gay anthem….maybe it wasn’t. But like it or not it BECAME a gay anthem. And they can sue if they want but it’s highly unlikely they’d succeed at anything but being excoriated.

  9. Oh, come on now. Every lyric of YMCA is suggestively queer/gay. Even the beat. Most people have enough understanding of the queer lifestyle to be familiar with what’s meant by those lyrics.
Sure, it’s a fun song to sing, butt (sorry) you can’t get away from the real theme. BTW, Willis is probably down low. He protests way too much.
