Underwater Volcano Off the Oregon Coast Poised to Erupt

Legal Insurrection-

The last time I wrote about seismic activity along the Pacific Northwest, it was about updates to emergency response plans related to two volcanoes in Washington.  One of the two, Mt. Adams, has had a noticeable uptick in small quakes, indicative of magma movement.

The other is the infamous Mt. St. Helens.

Now there are reports that Axial Seamount, an underwater volcano located approximately 300 miles off the Oregon coast and nearly a mile beneath the Pacific Ocean’s surface, is showing strong signs of an impending eruption. This volcano is the most active in the Pacific Northwest and one of the best-monitored underwater volcanoes globally.

One expert indicates the eruption could occur quite soon.

The volcano, known as Axial Seamount, is located nearly 1 mile (1.4 kilometers) underwater on a geological hot spot, where searing gushes of molten rock rise from Earth’s mantle and into the crust. Hotspot volcanoes are common on the seafloor. But Axial Seamount also happens to be located on the Juan de Fuca Ridge — an area where two massive tectonic plates (the Pacific and the Juan de Fuca plates) are constantly spreading apart, causing a steady buildup of pressure beneath the planet’s surface. more here

  1. Geo-weenies wetting themselves over what they conceded as common. Yakking it up I suppose to justify the millions or billions of dollars mis-spent “monitoring” the situration. So, geo-weenies: what ya gonna do about it if it gets serious? And at what intensity if it “serious?” Just what does “serious” mean to the mainland> What does “serions” mean to the sea lanes?

Or is the only reason for the no news slow news story so the “media” doesn’t have to talk about the Trump Administrations recent sucesses?

  2. Given that we are in a Grand Solar Minimum (reduced sunspots for decades, meaning less solar wind to shield us from cosmic rays, increased volcanic activity is to be expected. Cosmic rays change the viscosity of magma.

  3. “we need to drive more electric cars to offset this”.

Driving electric cars into the crater is a great idea regardless of whether it offsets this.

  4. This could actually change the climate (like the Tonga eruption did) by vaporizing billions of gallons of sea water into water vapor. The media will blame cow farts.

  5. And I’m shocked that the progressives haven’t demanded that the name “Juan de Fuca” be removed from the tectonic plate and ridge. After all, he was a Christian explorer, working for king Philip of Spain, spreading disease and practicing genocide among the peace-loving, innocent indigenous people. He’s right up there with Chris Columbus. Probably owned slaves too.

  6. Will be kinda nice getting your lobster already cooked. Innyhoo, a USGS article several years ago claimed that if the Wandafooka plate collapses, everything west of I-5 would become part of the Pacific Ocean, wiping out half of Portland. The east side of the Willamette River could become ocean front property. The only Portland government agency that would survive is the Department responsible for water conservation.
