A coalition of 18 states is calling on the Biden administration to terminate a taxpayer-funded tax filing preparation program, characterizing it as wasteful, unnecessary and flawed.
In a letter Monday to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Daniel Werfel, 21 top financial officials from 18 states said the costs of the IRS Direct File program “far outweigh any potential benefits” and will create new issues for taxpayers and states, alike. In May 2023, Yellen ordered the IRS to move forward with the first-of-its-kind program, which is funded by the Inflation Reduction Act. more here
$2.5 billion, it doesn’t do anything and hires thousands of federal employees to manage…..I can see why it was funded by the INFLATION REDUCTION ACT!

It would be far cheaper to send a copy of TurboTax to every American. And 60% of folks earn so little that they can use TurboTax FREE edition. Just another jobs program to more useless, unemployable Americans.
We filed (through H&R) on January 29th. Within a couple of days we got notification it had been received by the IRS and a few days later we were notified it had been accepted.
We went to the tracking site a week or so later and got a notice that we had to fill out an ID-Me form. It included a selfie, pictures of my driver’s license and a lot of other nonsense. When we were done we were told we’d get a letter in the mail with a 16 digit code to finalize our return (it was a rather large one).
Yesterday, nearly two months after we started we finally got the code. With it, came a letter that said we could expect our refund in about 9 weeks. IT’S MY MONEY!!!
Nco77 – so why did you hand over this much of your money to them, only to have to beg it back? I get the smaller amounts that everyone must deal with because formulas are imperfect, but you are saying a rather large one.
I have used H&R for years with no problems. This year return accepted immediately and received the refunds – Fed and Maine_ within two weeks. The key is to purchase the State add-on package. The same is true for Tax Cut. Feds can purchase a lot of either program for $2.5 billion
Tried to use it to file my moms. It takes half an hour just to verify your identity and then you need to video conference with them if you don’t have a picture id. You’re putting a lot of info online and we all know what happens to that.
My taxes are flawed every year.
