3 U.S. tourists die at same resort complex in the Dominican Republic

Daily Caller: Three U.S. tourists died of respiratory failure in a string of deaths all occurring at the same resort complex in the Dominican Republic, local authorities said, and families of the deceased are raising questions.

Pennsylvania psychotherapist Miranda Schaup-Werner, 41, reportedly died on May 25 in her room at the Bahia Principe Bouganville, one of her relatives told Fox News. A resort employee found Maryland couple Edward Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Day, 49, dead in their room also at a Bahia Principe hotel on May 30, the outlet reported.

Dominican authorities say all three victims died of the same condition: respiratory failure and pulmonary edema, or fluid building up in the lungs, according to Fox News.

The U.S. State Department released a statement to Fox News Tuesday, confirming the deaths of the three tourists.

The statement read:

We can confirm the recent deaths of three U.S. citizens in La Romana, the Dominican Republic — Nathaniel Edward Holmes, Cynthia Ann Day, and Miranda Schaup-Werner. We offer our sincerest condolences to the families for their loss. The U.S. Embassy is actively monitoring the investigations by Dominican authorities into these tragic deaths. We stand ready to provide assistance as requested.

The U.S. Department of State and our embassies and consulates abroad have no greater responsibility than the protection of U.S. citizens overseas. Out of respect to the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment.

  1. It is an S-hole country. Vacation at your own risk, even in all inclusive high end resorts. There have been a lot of reports of people blacking out or worse at resorts in s-hole countries after having alcoholic beverages and waking up robbed, raped, bloody, not knowing what happened. No thanks.

  3. in many cases it ends up being massive pesticide overuse in rooms. happened to a few people visiting S___holes. fall asleep at nite windows closed and never wake up. Be carefull.

  4. Maybe it was spiked drinks like they serve at the Mexican resorts. You’re knocked out and re-awaken in a hospital room with them demanding credit card numbers before you’re released. Upon return to your room you discover it’s been ransacked and you’ll have to call relatives back in the states to borrow money to get home.

  5. I have no sympathy for anyone who goes to a 3rd world country and bad shit happens to them.

You’re all morons and you deserve what you get for believing the propaganda that ‘they’re just like everyone else!’.

They’re not. Shitholes are shitholes because of the people.

  7. Just out running errands, and heard on the radio the report of a young couple from Texas dying from a mysterious illness in Fiji while there on vacation. Both knew they were becoming ill and went to hospital but could not be saved.

Here’s another report linking both the Fiji and DR tourists deaths.

  8. Hmm. Just noticed that second link was poorly written. It stated David and Michele Paul died in a hotel in DR that was near the hotel where the couple from Pa. died in the DR. But the Paul couple died in Fiji. I don’t think the DR and Fiji are “close by” to one another.
