Daily Fetched – A woman in Belgium was killed when a Christmas tree fell in a crowded city square during a storm that brought heavy rain and strong winds across northern Europe.

The 65-foot tree collapsed late Thursday at a busy Christmas market in Oudenaarde in western Belgium.

Reuters reported that the brightly lit tree began slowly leaning over before collapsing as a merry-go-round turned.

The 63-year-old woman died and two other people were injured in the accident,

‘Gusts of wind and the heavy rain made sure that the tree collapsed,’ Mayor Marnic De Meulemeester said. The Christmas market was immediately canceled.

  1. O can’t believe the there are still Christmas trees in Europe, what withe the…diverse…population. Of course, they’ll probably be banned after this disaster.

And it’s cold comfort knowing that we aren’t the only country having trouble keep our Christmas trees upright. Maybe it’s a sign of our idiocratic times.

  2. “Oh come on man! Who’s to say this was not a blessed sacrifice? When your time comes, run as fast as you can?”

How fast can you run in a walker? Live hard, die young, leave a good looking corpse. Man. LOL

…no, the fact that whoever failed to engineer the tree mounting to be able to handle the worst possible conditions +10% is what made it possible for the tree to collapse. Your failure to properly manage your Public Works department sufficiently to ensure that they didn’t create public displays that were actually public safety hazards in conditions that were not unusual in that area, combined with the fact that you didn’t close attractions and rides due to adverse weather conditions puts the blame squarely on YOU, Mr. Mayor.

If there is trouble, it is the fault of authority to not anticipate and mitigate that trouble to the greatest extent possible.

YOU are the authority, Mr. Mayor.

The tree did NOT “surely” have to collapse. Its size, design, placement, and mounting should all have been determined with regard to known and predictable hazards with regard to ameliorating risks to the public space it is being displayed in. You failed to ensure this was done, Mayor.

The buck surely stops with YOU.

  4. 1 Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good
