ICYMI: Minimum wage policy backfires in Seattle

“Are you happy with the $15 wage?” I asked the full-time cleaning lady.

“It sounds good, but it’s not good,” the woman said.

“Why?” I asked.

“I lost my 401k, health insurance, paid holiday, and vacation,” she responded. “No more free food,” she added.

The Emerald City may witness the economic dangers of hiking the minimum wage to $15/hour sooner rather than later. SeaTac, a suburb of Seattle, hiked the minimum wagefor certain service industry employees to $15 at the beginning of the year, and there are already signs that the sudden increase is having a negative impact.

Earlier this month, Seattle voted to raise its minimum wage gradually to $15 by the year 2020. Unlike the SeaTac wage hike, Seattle’s hike will apply to all businesses.

But 15 minutes south near the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, employees are already seeing the negative effects of such a hike. A February report from the Seattle Times revealed:

At the Clarion Hotel off International Boulevard, a sit-down restaurant has been shuttered, though it might soon be replaced by a less-labor-intensive cafe…

Other businesses have adjusted in ways that run the gamut from putting more work in the hands of managers, to instituting a small “living-wage surcharge” for a daily parking space near the airport.

That’s not all. According to Assunta Ng, publisher of the Northwest Asian Weekly, some employees are feeling the pinch as employers cut benefits. She recalls a conversation she had with two hotel employees who have been affected by the wage hike:

  1. Of course the government get’s more income taxes out of those people who have lost all the benefits offered by their firm but who now get (at lest initially) $15 a hour.

I wonder how much they actually get to pocket each pay check after taxes($9.00 an hour, $8.00)?

Florida’s got a nice, sandy [no minimum wage] spot for you.

“I lost my 401k, health insurance, paid holiday, and vacation,” she responded. “No more free food,” she added.”

    BWAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAAHAHAA
be careful what you wish for
    HAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA.

  3. WTF is “free food?”

    Plows the ground.
    Fertilizes the soil.
    Plants itself.
    Grows itself.
    Harvests itself.
    Cleans and processes itself.
    Trucks itself.
    Cooks itself.
    Flavors itself.
Chews itself and jumps into her mouth?

    People are abysmally ignorant.

  4. A liberal can’t see beyond the end of their nose. They were told time and time again that doubling the minimum wage would be a job killer. Now it is not only a job killer, but a business killer too. The city gets less tax from business because business either closes shop or moves away. What the hell is wrong with liberals? Are they truly mentally deficient? Let’s call it what it is. Retarded.

  5. Overall, the gub’mint in Seattle probably thinks this is a pretty good trade – for the gub’mint. Discouraging non-cash perks for wages makes it a lot easier to tax the income. For the working people who will have to declare more taxable income – maybe not so good.

  6. The real winner in this minimum wage scam!

yup , cuz all kinds of govt union worker shit is tied to the minimum wage – and the poverty level and maybe even the free school lunch bullshit

  7. Hiking the minimum wage won’t make you smart enough to realize you just had anal sex with yourself.
More money won’t fix stupid. It’s entertaining to watch the Utopian vampire feasting on you morons though. Stay dumb and carry on

  8. Oh, I don’t feel I make enough so instead of going out and getting that higher wage, I think I’ll just whine to some politician. Sheesh.
They’ll never catch on that no matter how high you set it, the minimum wage is still the minimum.

  9. Wow. That poor cleaning lady lost so much. Are those knuckle-headed liberals going to ignore business owners until it’s too late? The logic of cause and effect is not just for science. Those foolish politicians think a “gradual” increase will lessen the pain for business owners, hoping for some apathy to set in. Quite the contrary, the wise entrepreneur will simply anticipate and plan ahead–as is the case already for some. Seattle, the New Detroit.

  10. So the unions are trying to unionize fast food & other min wage workers, while at the same time there’s a massive push for a15.00 min wage. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.

  11. Hell, if you’re gonna be stupid, be really stupid and go for $1,000 an hour. Go big or go home! Oh, wait…you’ll already be home because your (former) employer won’t need you. Same at $15 for that matter.

  12. Cue the screams for higher earning limits for means tested gov’t programs, boycotts of business that cut bennies for the higher min wage.

I heard the other day, “They’re all heartless, not wanting to pay a ‘living wage'”. Too bad most of the activists never really earned a ‘working wage’.
