Michael Sam not signed to St. Louis Rams practice squad

USA Today

The St. Louis Rams have filled their 10-player practice squad, and it does not include defensive end Michael Sam.

Sam, who is trying to become the NFL’s first openly gay player, was among the final players the Rams cut on Saturday as the team set its 53-man roster. The Rams kept nine defensive linemen, including five defensive ends.

Sam, a seventh-round pick from Missouri, was likely the 10th – and the sixth defensive end, behind starters Chris Long and Robert Quinn, reserves Eugene Sims and Williams Hayes, and rookie Ethan Westbrooks.

  1. See if they’ll take him on the cheer squad. lol
They should have never taken that guy in the first place, and they know it. I don’t care who he’s banging, he has no talent.

  2. I want to say something like, “Hope he did some studying while at Missouri, ’cause it looks like he’s gonna need to fall back on it to find work.”

But maybe not. They’re hiring big, black, “gay” studs in San Francisco (and in San Antonio now, I hear).

  3. Sam played a lot during the pre-season and actually played well. Not a star by any means, but definitely a good depth player. ESPN’s horribly unprofessional reporting recently about the shower stuff in the locker room couldnt have helped matters (maybe it was posted here, cant remember). Teams are aware that media is the problem in all this, especially giant ESPN.

Sam, SEC defensive player of the year, is good enough as a project on some team’s practice squad for now, but most teams just dont want to deal with the media right now.

  4. He had his shot, played as best he could but in the end wasn’t good enough for professional football. Just the same as hundreds of players each season. Maybe he can pick up with another team but if not I hope he has the class to walk away without resorting to straight-bashing.
