New York Times Slashes 7.5% of Staff; Digital Platforms Fail
After weeks of rumors, The New York Times announced Wednesday that more than 100 newsroom jobs will be slashed, as “well as a smaller number of positions from its editorial and business operations[.]” If enough people don’t accept buyouts, the ax will fall. According to the Huffington Post, this adds up to a huge 7.5% cut of the overall Times‘ staff.
What has to be especially troubling for the Times is that its new much-hyped digital platforms have failed. According to the paper’s editor Dean Baquet, the NYT Now and NYT Opinion apps are “not achieving the business success we expected.”
NYT Opinion will be killed off.

B-b-butt by every measure, the economy is better! A transgendered waterbuffalo told me so.
The jump off the edge of the cliff for Americas’ commie propaganda machine is nearing final approach.
I,m sure they’ll find some work with the Obama administration.
Couldn’t happen to a better group of folks.
Can we vote on which ones get the axe first? 7.5% is just the start. As to the plans of digital media being a success, very few people will pay for on-line news – especially if it’s from the NYT. At least with their printed edition, you can line your bird cage.
Make them an offer they can’t refuse, Koch Brothers, please!
I feel sorry for the…nope.
My heart goes out to…nope.
This is horrible for the…nope.
Sorry, just not feelin’ it for the Newspaper of Wreckage.
Wanna bet this is related in no small way to the full effects of ObamaTax due to hit AFTER the elections?
@Stranded
My sentiments exactly.
Hey, PROGS!
Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch.

I’ll go to bed but wIll not be able to sleep….Bahahahahahahaha.
When I was growing up, people from The Times were forever calling our house selling home delivery subscriptions. This was pretty rich, since my father wouldn’t even allow the paper in the house. I can still do a pretty good imitation of my mother telling the poor sap on the other end of the line, “I’m so sorry, but I wouldn’t wipe my ass with The Times.”
The NYT competes with Raw Story and Talking Points Memo except the latter gives away the same level of dishonest partisanship for free.
How can you compete with free? If you fire another 100 people followed by everybody else eventually.
Good. Keep it up. They’d rather serve the left and go out of business than present both sides and stay in business. Fukkum.
In a sea of communist propaganda, what’s another sinking whale fece.
So (can’t decide on a period or a question mark here)(.?)
Poor saps. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, I mean, awwww.
hahahahahaha Oh, now, just stop it.
hehehehehehehe

Good riddance!
INDEPENDENCE! Now they can get to the hard reporting/Investigative/questions that everyone is interested in, Like “Would you like to super-size that for an extra 10 cents? “
