New York Times Slashes 7.5% of Staff; Digital Platforms Fail

After weeks of rumors, The New York Times announced Wednesday that more than 100 newsroom jobs will be slashed, as “well as a smaller number of positions from its editorial and business operations[.]” If enough people don’t accept buyouts, the ax will fall. According to the Huffington Post, this adds up to a huge 7.5% cut of the overall Times‘ staff.

What has to be especially troubling for the Times is that its new much-hyped digital platforms have failed. According to the paper’s editor Dean Baquet, the NYT Now and NYT Opinion apps are “not achieving the business success we expected.”

NYT Opinion will be killed off.

  1. Can we vote on which ones get the axe first? 7.5% is just the start. As to the plans of digital media being a success, very few people will pay for on-line news – especially if it’s from the NYT. At least with their printed edition, you can line your bird cage.

  2. When I was growing up, people from The Times were forever calling our house selling home delivery subscriptions. This was pretty rich, since my father wouldn’t even allow the paper in the house. I can still do a pretty good imitation of my mother telling the poor sap on the other end of the line, “I’m so sorry, but I wouldn’t wipe my ass with The Times.”

  3. The NYT competes with Raw Story and Talking Points Memo except the latter gives away the same level of dishonest partisanship for free.

How can you compete with free? If you fire another 100 people followed by everybody else eventually.

  4. INDEPENDENCE! Now they can get to the hard reporting/Investigative/questions that everyone is interested in, Like “Would you like to super-size that for an extra 10 cents? “
