Throwing acid on people is pretty old school. A very close friend of 40 years, from the time we served together on a submarine, recently passed away. His grandfather. LB Reed, was Chief of Police of Kansas City from 1939 – 41.
His mother was a teen aged girl at the time and she had no fond memories of KC. Everywhere she went she had a bodyguard, and they had to drive with the car windows up, even in the heat of summer without a/c, to prevent thugs from tossing acid through the window. A popular method of attack in those days.
LB Reed had no tolerance of corrupt politicians. He was just as determined to arrest a corrupt politician as he was to arrest a Pendergast crime family thug. He wrote a book, Human Wolves:seventeen years of war on crime. Mr Reed wrote crime can only succeed when a community has 3 things: corrupt politicians, corrupt business leaders, and criminals. Like the fire triangle, remove on needed element and the fire never starts or it goes out..
After leaving the KCPD – Mr Reed was with the OSS in WW2, and later the CIA, apparently involved with taking down some nasty national leaders in the kind of mischievous activities the CIA was into previous to the Bay of Pigs.
