A sister’s legacy honored through service dog program aimed to help veterans

TVP: The anxiety that crept in the night before Darla Grese and Kelli met melted away soon after the two came face to face in a Portsmouth shopping center.

There, Kelli scampered across the concrete floor of Hampton Roads Hounds for Heroes chasing a toy held by Grese’s 8-year-old son Brady. Moments later, a panting Kelli – a mixed-breed hound – curled up next to Grese’s chair. Grese reached down and smoothed her black and white fur.

“This is just perfect,” Grese said. “She couldn’t be more appropriate.”

It had been about a month since Grese received a Facebook message from Linda McAbee, Hampton Roads Hounds for Heroes’ founder. The year-old nonprofit trains shelter dogs to become service animals for veterans who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder or other mental disorders.  more
