Chipotle is facing a crisis that has nothing to do with E. coli

BI: People are getting tired of Chipotle’s menu, and that could be an even bigger problem for the company than its recent E. coli crisis that sent sales plunging.

The outbreak was declared over in February, but Chipotle’s sales are continuing to fall.

The company said on Thursday that revenue fell 16.6% to $998.4 million in the second quarter, despite opening 58 new restaurants.

Same-store sales dropped 23.6% in the same period, and transactions or traffic dropped 19.3%.

But even before the E. coli crisis, Chipotle was showing signs of decline.  more here

  1. Go look at their stock market chart. Spiraling death plunge. Not. Good.

The article recommends more spending on marketing.
    Um. Yeah.

Maybe Martin Mull can resurrect some of his old Taco and Run spoofs.

  2. I am not by any means a fussy eater. My lifelong policy has been to eat anything that didn’t eat me first.

But Chipotle food was so utterly underwhelming, I never went back a second time.

  3. Not too sorry to see them on their way out. Bullritos is better and still not as good as a Freebirds monster with all the meats and a beer. I call it the Critical Mass.

  4. Couldn’t happen to a better bunch of leftists. First the no-guns policy, then the “we hire illegals” deal, and finally the whole Montezuma’s revenge thing. Karma’s a bitch, ain’t it?

  5. I stopped going there years ago, after finding out about their huge illegal alien workforce in their kitchens. The people cooking your food are the same ones who shit in the lettuce patch and sicken or kill people!!
The e.coli outbreaks came along more recently and all I could say was “Gee! What took that so long”?

  6. @Oil Field Trash – exactly! Growing up in southern California and Arizona, Mexican food was abundant and good. I never heard of rice in a burrito before the chains like Chipotle and Baja Fresh started loading them up. Maybe it’s a regional thing, I don’t know. But whenever I want a burrito now, I’m sure to ask if they put rice in it. If so, no thank you.

  7. Though generally popular, Mexican is still niche cuisine. Burgers, chicken, pizza will always be more popular. I get a taste for a taco or burrito about once a year, and that’s it. However, I could eat pizza 3 x a wek, no problem.
