Salad makes you fat

NYP:  Salad seems to be the perfect lunch: light, healthy, not too expensive.

For around $10, salad delivers a complete meal without the highly caloric bread found in its chief rival, sandwiches. Plus, salad is easy to eat at work and is packed with the fresh vegetables, hearty whole grains and clean protein needed to fuel the secret gym warrior hidden deep inside all of us.

But what if salad is a big fat lie — literally? As we found while looking at the most popular menu items at five of the nation’s favorite salad spots, plenty of these seemingly innocent lunches are bloated in both price and calories.

  1. SKIP THE DRESSING!

Or use balsamic vinegar–great taste, hardly any calories.

Healthiest dressing is homemade lemon vinaigrette–mix 2 parts extra virgin olive oil to 1 part fresh-squeezed lemon juice. Mmmmmm.

  2. Anyone who eats any of those regularly and expects to lose weight is either ignorant or lying to themselves. Those salads are not TRUE salads in the weight loss sense. Yes, the add-ons are where all the flavor and interest is, but with all the extra calories (and often carbs) eating any of those is not really “eating a salad.”

If one wants to lose weight by eating salads, a straight up plate of mixed veg eaten one meal a day for a few weeks, topped with bleu cheese or another lower carb dressing and minimal protein, will drop the weight. Yeah, it’d get boring quick but the caloric (and nutritional) content in salads is minimal. You’re basically consuming fiber-enriched water, which is why REAL salads work for losing fat.

  3. Here is my favorite salad:

Jumbo shrimp, avocado, Mandarin orange segments, red onion, walnuts on Bibb lettuce. Homemade vinaigrette made from extra-virgin olive oil and raspberry vinegar.

    Here is my go-to salad:

Romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, red onions, feta cheese, green olives. I use only plain extra virgin olive oil for dressing because the feta cheese packs such a sharp flavor punch.

  4. Here’s my ultimate weight-loss salad:

Cut up one head of lettuce into bite-size chunks.
    Salt and pepper to taste.
    Eat.

When you’re done, you’ll be full and you won’t gain an ounce.

What’s that? You wanted to enjoy eating it?

Well, that’s a whole different ball game, isn’t it?

    😛

  5. Meat salad, with beer. Lotsa beer. By the time I’m finished, I don’t give a damn if it was healthy.
My wife, on the other hand, has different meals planned for me. And she’s right. But every once in a while…

  6. $10 for a salad?
    You gotta be fuckin kidding!

Lettuce, tomato, onion, celery, radish and some vinegar.

$10 would feed both of us for a week (of salads).

    izlamo delenda est …
