BusinessBend: Some wars go on forever. Years, decades, even centuries if we’re counting some of those hot-again, cold-again ideological conflicts over religion. Some of those can run on for centuries.
But battles themselves, by comparison, are pretty quick. Sure, some can stretch on for weeks or months, but for the most part, a single battle is merely one piece in a broader conflict and is usually over pretty quickly.
Still, at certain points throughout history, attempts to lay siege (i.e., attack a particular castle, city or other strategic landmark until its yours) have gone on longer than most wars, including massive conflicts like World War II. For one reason or another, these armies attempting to take over a strategic point have been stuck clanging their swords against gates and walls for years, and in some cases, over a decade.
Can you imagine being camped out in front of the same impenetrable fortress for over a decade? MORE
