How Trump won over a bar full of undecideds and Democrats

NYP: YOUNGSTOWN, Pa. — Ken Reed sat down at the main bar of the Tin Lizzy tavern with two things in mind: to dig into the tavern’s oversize cheese steak, and watch the presidential debate.

“I am hungry and undecided, in that order,” he said, digging into the savory dish in a bar that dates back to 1746.

Kady Letoksy, a paralegal by day, a waitress and bartender at night at the Tin Lizzy, sat beside him. At 28, she has never voted before, and she is now thinking it might be a good idea to start.

Letosky entered the evening undecided in a town that is heavily Democratic in registration. Her sister and father are on opposite sides of the political aisle. Donald “Trump had the upper hand this evening,” she said, citing his command of the back-and-forth between him and Hillary Clinton.

  1. This is the unforeseen looming disaster for Hillary Rodham Clinton. So hellbent was she to appeal to blacks and Hispanics, she didn’t just ignore white working class voters; she vilified them and alienated them.

She isn’t just losing the Obama coalition; she’s losing the friggin’ Democrat Party.

No other Republican could have done this — not Rubio, not Cruz. None of them.

The Democrat Party has been abandoning traditional Democrats for more than a decade. Trump is the perfect Republican candidate to appeal to them.

I am beginning to suspect November might be a bloodbath.

  2. Bars tend to be noisy places, so Ms. Letosky probably couldn’t hear the TV too well, so she was left with looking at the two faces on the screen. Smug Hillary’s ugly mug should have been enough to turn all but the most virulent democrats.

  3. No, Dianny: no bloodbath yet.

Trump has a *lot* of work to do to convince the #NeverTrumpers and the folks who are just scared, worried, concerned. Last night did nothing for them. Last night, The Donald’s hair, alone, was scary.

He needs to listen to Kellyanne and Bannon. Whatever he “is” after the election, sobeit, but, if we are going to get the bloodbath, he has got to stop interrupting Hillary, bragging about his “amazing company” and, calmly, being more presidential, as he is when he has the damn teleprompter. *Someone* needs to reign him in!

Only then, will we have the bloodbath I crave. …Lady in Red

  4. Speaking of Pennsylvania, we are moving from Washington State to southwestern Pennsylvania within the month. I’m really having to finagle to make sure we are registered to vote in PA. One must be resident in the state for 30 days prior. Not sure if we’ll make it.

Suggestions? Fake it and say we were there 30 days prior? Vote in Washington instead (which will be useless as Hillary will most like win here)?

    What would you do?

  5. Les Crawley did a really poor job at single-sided moderation.

Wild Trump did fall for some of the triggers he did keep a lot of powder dry for the next couple of bouts.

Trump is a quick study and he’s really shaping up.

Hillary didn’t do yourself any favors by being over prepared while Trump just resorted under pressure to being himself which isn’t all that bad.

After all we do want to see the man behind the curtain and Trump is always shown us that.

  6. LIR – me, too, which is why we are returning. Where are you from (if you care to share it)?

I can certainly register in time, by mail. My problem is the 30-day residency. We won’t take possession of the house until mid-October. It is unoccupied and I was thinking of using the address anyway and just having my cousin check the mailbox for us.

  7. Yep. Use your cousin! I was born on the Allegheny River, thirty miles north of Pittsburgh, which is so cleaned up now.

Back in the “olden” days they didn’t know how to do clean steel.

I wish you happiness there. ….Lady in Red

PS: If you run into any problems with the election board, just tell them that Lady in Red, a *very* good old friend of Hillary’s, said it was ok. ….wink-wink.

  8. Callie – DO IT. It’s not like you are committing out-and-out voter fraud like the Democrats do. As long as you aren’t going to also vote in Wash state, I’m cool with it.

*Democrat Party voters vote multiple times per election – show up to vote AND vote with an absentee ballot
*Democrat Party voters vote in multiple jusrisdictions – next town, county or state over, using a friends address
*Democrat Party voters vote when they are dead, for years and years after their deaths

  9. @greetingsFY – In Washington we will get a mail ballot automatically by around Oct. 20 (if we are still here). They don’t really have a traditional “absentee” ballot process.

  10. LIR – thank you for your kind wishes. We will be about 50 miles south of Pittsburgh, not too far from Ohiopyle and Fort Necessity. I can’t wait. Hope we get there in time to see the leaves turn on the mountainsides.

  11. RC good luck with the move. The cost of living has got to lower than the left coast.
I am originally from the beautiful Lehigh Valley.

  12. “…she didn’t just ignore white working class voters; she vilified them and alienated them.”

She thought “implicit bias” would fly right over the heads of stupid Trump voters. She’s still annoyed that we won’t let go of “basket of deplorables”. She is in for a big shock.

    Save your breath, skank.

  13. Thanks so much Cate and MJA and Eugenia. And nein, my half of my ancestors were there in 1776, the other half came from Slovakia about 1908. 😉 But English is my only language.

  14. Interesting, Callie. I’m something of a mongrel myself, but some of the same background. After mastering the spelling of Mississippi, the next challenge was Czechoslovakia.

Once I said something to my grandfather about being a Czech and he sent me flying across the room. “You are a *Slovak* and never forget that!”

  15. Callie, this is a very bad year to get all principled and stuff about voting.

I voted in Yonkers in 2008 even though I still lived in Brooklyn. I had renewed my non-driver’s state ID earlier that year. New York State allows you to register to vote when you get/renew ID from Motor Vehicles, so I used the opportunity to register to vote from my new Yonkers address, thinking I’d be living there by Election Day.

My move ended up being delayed for a few months owing to numerous factors beyond my control. But I voted in Yonkers anyway. I only voted in the Federal and state races, skipping the county and city contests, because I didn’t think it was fair to vote for local candidates when I wasn’t really living there yet. I was still living in the state and the country though, so I pulled the lever for these candidates.

Hope you work out a TRUMPIAN solution to your problem. We need you on board to defeat The Canklous one!

  16. @LIR – Exactly, only my grandparents narrowed it down even further. They were Carpatho-Rus, and I’d better not forget it. I still do some of their Christmas traditions.
