FOX: Forget Halloween costumes and yoga, there’s a new symbol of cultural appropriation—the canoe.
According to Misao Dean, Professor of English at the University of Victoria, the canoe can be a symbol of colonialism, imperialism and genocide due to history. She also accused the canoers of cultural appropriation because they are primarily white men and have a privileged place in society.
In a radio interview for CBC Radio, which wasn’t picked by the Internet until several months later, she claimed “we have a whole set of narratives that make the canoe into a kind of morally untouchable symbol, something that seems natural, that seems ordinary, and seems to promote values that we ascribe to.” MORE

I might have been more impressed if they had named the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria for their symbols. At least those were made by White people, and you could argue that they had some connection, however remote, with the subject of their complaints.

How about we all quit appropriating other cultures. I’ll give up canoes to not offend the indigenous peoples of North America, Mexican food and what ever culture we imported from Africa if they give up modern medicine, the benefits of the modern food supply, modern musical instruments, modern clothing, writing, modern transportation and all technological development since 1500 BC. I think that’s fair.
