DailyNews: It’s official. Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Thursday he’s joining the race for California’s highest office in 2018 after months of speculation.
Villaraigosa, 63, who has taken a break from politics since leaving City Hall three years ago, said he’s running for governor largely to rebuild the state’s shrinking middle class.
The former Democratic Assembly speaker announced his decision and launched campaign website antonioforcalifornia.com two days after Republican real estate mogul Donald J. Trump clinched the presidency in a stunning electoral upset over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“I think that the way to restore the luster of the California dream is to give voice to more Californians, to focus on parts of the state that frankly have been left behind, that haven’t had a voice,” Villaraigosa said in a telephone interview. “I think it’s been clear who has been left behind. We saw that in this campaign. I think we heard from working people and people in the middle class who feel like the economy is not working for them.”
Several other high-profile Democratic candidates have announced their intention to run for the post, including Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a former mayor of San Francisco, state Treasurer John Chiang of Torrance, and Delaine Eastin, former state schools’ chief. Billionaire investor and environmental activist Tom Steyer has said he’s considering a run but told KQED Radio’s “The California Report” this week that he may focus on his activism to fight Trump instead. If they secede quickly enough maybe he’ll be president of a soon-to-be third-world country on our border where we’ll build another fence, because you know people will discover quickly enough how utopia works once it’s entrenched in a massive way–and they have to pay for it without aid.
“If they secede quickly enough”
Let me tell you exactly how Fing stoooopid that is. No Federal assist money. I’m sure they figured that out. How about lost Federal Military contracts? That number is huge. These people aren’t living in the real world.
I was once “Latrine Orderly” for a day in Fort Gordon. Man I had those toilet seats shining and at attention. Every urinal was glistening an spotless, each roll of toilet paper hung, forward at exactly 4 1/2 inches, (There is an Army regulation on that) enough for a proper grip. The floor glowed like a bowling alley.
The Inspecting Major congradulated me and my company commander gave me a nod and a wink. Years later “Gomer Pyle USMC” stole my
method and made it an episode. Hilarious . Remember “buffing the barracks floor” ? “Fire watch,”
keeping the furnaces stoked all night in winter?
That was all before our asses were shipped overseas to foreign lands
to protect the World.
Happy Veteran’s Day Y’all.
O I forgot, based on my experience as a LO I could run for Governor of California. Bad Brad approves this message.
@Moe Tom – did you rig up pulleys and wires to the toilet seats so that when the major came in the room and you came to attention, the seats did too?
I don’t want to cast doubt on your LO story, but it sounds a lot like it was taken out of No Time for Sergeants by Mac Hyman and later made into a movie of the same name starring Andy Griffith. Or maybe you’re old enough that Hyman wrote about YOU! (The book was published in 1954.)
To be fair, he did put God back into the Dem platform 4 years ago.
Well, he was the guy they made do it, and to ignore the voice vote against and say ‘the ayes have it!’
Just love dem Dems.
@Brad, nope, they aren’t, but then again I don’t think they ever were.
“PARTY!!”
“Where the women at?!”
“Aw, comon’!”
“…I believe in me…”
Of course J&K are looking forward to his run. Villar makes great filler.
POS Antonio Villaraigosa will be running against POS Gavin Newsome.
California sucks, and I live here!
Brad,
SHHHHHHH, for crying out loud.
Actually, California would be a great state once again if it could be separated from the Grape Vine Southward, and from the San Andreas Fault Westward.
