Stein’s False Promise of ‘Free’ Recounts

LifeZette: While Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein’s campaign is covering what’s required for the recounts she is forcing in states that tipped the scales in favor of President-Elect Trump — taxpayers will carry a hefty sum, at least in Michigan.

The estimated cost will be $5 million, said Fred Woodhams, spokesman for Michigan’s Republican Secretary of State Ruth Johnson. Stein has paid $787,500.

“More than $4 million of that will be borne by Michigan taxpayers in counties across the state,” Woodhams told LifeZette. “She has already paid the maximum amount she is required to pay by state law.”

In Wisconsin, where Stein’s campaign must pay the entire $3.5 million cost, Stein complained in a statement, “It is another sign of democracy in crisis that ordinary citizens must pay so steep a price in order to assure the validity of our votes.” And she has taken her demand for a Pennsylvania recount to federal court.

“PA voters are worried about the accuracy, security, and fairness of an election tainted by suspicion,” Stein tweeted Sunday. “That’s why a $1M bond is outrageous.”

Her campaign is challenging the state court-ordered $1 million bond to proceed with a recount.

Well, recounts aren’t free — they take manpower and resources. If Stein doesn’t pay for it, then it’s the “ordinary people” of those states, better known as taxpayers, who will foot the bill for this exercise of futility.

Costs aside, the Michigan recount isn’t legal, according to state Attorney General Bill Schuette. That’s because the person petitioning for a recount has to in some way be “aggrieved” under Michigan law. Stein wasn’t “aggrieved” because she got only 1 percent of the vote in the state.

“Michigan voters rejected Stein’s candidacy by massive margins but her refusal to accept that state-verified result poses an expensive and risky threat to hardworking taxpayers and abuses the intent of Michigan law,” Schuette said in a statement.  “We have asked the court to end the recount which Stein is pursuing in violation of Michigan laws that protect the integrity of our elections. It is inexcusable for Stein to put Michigan voters at risk of paying millions and potentially losing their voice in the Electoral College in the process.”  read more

9 Comments on Stein’s False Promise of ‘Free’ Recounts

  1. Stein makes the claim the integrity of the election needs to be challenged based on a theory of fraud when no evidence has been found by anybody. She should be allowed to contest based on that claim, HOWEVER, if the recount shows that there was no fraud (as it is showing now), then Stein should have to pay the ENTIRE cost for the recount. The fees, attorney fees, overtime for counters, the overseers, everybody and everything.

Well, she should have to do that in any case, but I’m just saying that should be the rule for anybody who was not the runner-up and within striking distance of winning.

Just like it should be in court when an asshole files a frivolous lawsuit that does nothing more than waste court time. When they lose, they should have to pay the lawyers fees for both sides and the court costs for the waste of the courts time.

  2. This one is dangerous because she has no moral grounding for her philosophy.
She is one who will lose no sleep over destroying lives or sending those whose disagree to the gulag.

  3. Considering Stein, Hillary, Obama, Tim Kaine, Bernie, Jeb Bush, Hiawatha Warren, Joe Biden, Pelosi, Keith Ellison, McConnell, Paul Ryan…

America has a gaggle of despicable “celebrity” politicians. Anger inducing, worthless parasites. Even worse than France.

  4. I believe Washington State has it so if the recount overturns the original results the the person or persons requesting it do not have to pay. If it is not then the do have to pay.

That seems fair to me, or we are going to see every election in the future recounted.

  5. Stein’s three state recount effort is counter-productive. Realistically, Al Franken can only drive to one, or perhaps two states with a trunk full of ballots, and driving to three states is impossible.

Oh well, Wisconsin should be done by December 19, and this makes it all moot because Trump only needs one state to finish by then.
