LIRR Train Derails in Brooklyn; 76 People Hurt

NBC- A Long Island Rail Road train derailed at Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn at the height of Wednesday’s morning rush, injuring more than six dozen people and riddling the track area with shattered glass and debris.

Fire officials say 76 people were hurt when the train plowed into track 6 at the terminal around 8:30 a.m.; all were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Pictures on social media showed the train tipped slightly at an angle. The platform also appeared to be smoky as emergency personnel flooded the scene. Photos from within the train showed seats toppled to the ground; splintered wood, fire extinguishers and other debris littered the floor.

  1. “William Rockefeller gently eased the throttle forward, and the train glided out of the station. He was finally back in the driver’s seat, and this time, he was going to make the most of it…”

  2. How about some of the geniuses indulging in the intellectual self-gratification of computer driven cars on public roads work instead on reliably automating commuter trains running on the same tracks and schedules every single day?

If Da Union has to have protected jobs, let them polish the computer screens.

  3. de Blasio is now pushing for new train control ordinances in NYC.

    > Trains will now be levied an additional 20% tax to discourage use, thereby protecting potential riders from accidents like today’s.

    > Trains will be limited to a maximum of ten cars. “This will reduce casualties if a bitter right wing clinger of a car goes off the tracks.”

    > Trains will be required to be made out of cardboard. “Metal cuts people. Knives are made of metal. Bullets are made of metal. Cardboard, not so much.”
