Man Cycling Home for Holiday Realizes He Has Been Going in the Wrong Direction for Over a Month

OC: A migrant worker hoping to make it back home for the Chinese New Year realized he had been riding his bike the wrong way for over a month, when a police crew stopped him for cycling on the side of an expressway.

The unnamed man was apparently working in Rizhao, China’s Shandong province, but after spending most of his money in internet cafe, he didn’t have enough to by a train ticket to his native city of Qiqihar, in north-east China. Determined to spend the holidays with his family, the guy decided cycling all the way home was his best option, so he hopped on his bike and started what he thought was a nearly 1,700 kilometer journey. The problem was that he didn’t really know the way, and since he was also unable to read the road signs, he decided to rely on the directions of total strangers. That turned out to be a very bad idea. MORE

  1. I’ll cut the man some slack. They have two alphabets. He might be able to sound out one and not have a clue about the other. Below are two Asian names, one with English alphabet, the other uses Kanji. Could you pronounce one or both?
    Melati Najihah
    津波とか東北に不謹慎やろ

  2. R = Right, L = Left. Those ABBREVIATED written directions given by a local, while accurate, went wrong at the first turn.

While simple: At the corner, turn R and keep going that’s it, his misinterpreting R as L was an error that doomed his journey from the start.

  3. If this is true, the dude is lying to stay out of prison, he is in an area he is not allowed to be in. China strictly enforces where people can go within provinces and cities.

I’ve been through the checkpoints – in one instance an armed guard removed on of our workers from the vehicle because she left her passport at the hotel. She was immediately sent back to her home country.
