CNS: What’s the most dangerous thing you can say to someone in our society? “You’re useless!”
Amy Julia Becker is a successful author and columnist. She also is the mom of a beautiful daughter, a fifth-grader who wears glasses, who loves reading and spelling, but who isn’t so sure about fractions and dogs. “She is responsible, smart, talented, and loving,” Amy wrote recently in Christianity Today. “She also has Down syndrome.”
When discussing her daughter or others with Down syndrome, Amy says she is tempted to list their accomplishments and abilities as a way to justify their existence. Not any more. “In so doing,” Amy admits, “I play into the idea that I, too, am only worthy of life because I contribute something productive in the world. I devalue myself and everyone else around me when I start to see human beings as products to be measured.” read more
We all have strengths. We all have frailties.
We all are persons. We all are ends in ourselves.
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Judgments like this are only made by Liberals.
920,000 to 1 million women per year place no value on the life of an unborn child. Over 59 Million children aborted since 1973.
Blessed are those who survive to love and be loved.
I thought after Helen Keller this kind of thinking had disappeared, guess not.
At the heart of Capitalism is the idea that highly productive people can earn more money, and I’m pretty okay with that.
Avoid the lifeboat mentality.
Capitalism, is generous.Capitalism is compassionate. Capitalism does NOT measure human worth. Doubt me, look up charitable contributions in the Obama era and compare them to the Reagan era.
God has a perfect purpose for that little girl.
It is a mystery that we cannot understand.
God Bless her and her loving family.
Yep, the left would line them all up for the
gas chamber and then laugh about it over cocktails.
Phuck them.
“I’m a bad guy” comment:
Why do we need to have an article that reaffirms that folks who have slower operating systems…are still people…?
I mean, as an uncle to an autistic boy, he’s still human, a little wild, but human. He’s got a thing for shampoo and dish soap and constantly coming up with ways to keep them locked up is the spice of life right…

Working too hard to study the topic is not productive.
i will never understand how a woman can abort a baby due to its genetic makeup, but 90% of women carrying a Down Syndrome child do abort. If this genetic makeup is objectionable, then what’s next? Sex-selective abortion? NO, no, no I want a boy! Let’s get rid of this girl and start over. Abortion because the baby will have green eyes instead of blue? Where does it end, once Pandora’s box is opened?
@Sum Random: I’m with you on this. In my family we have a downs syndrome child and a severely autistic child who will probably never speak a word. We love them and the lessons they teach us in unconditional love, compassion and the wonder of the human brain.
But they are not the equivalent of Jonas Salk, John Locke, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison or Milton Friedman although we devote more taxpayer resources to them than we do to gifted children. (Do people realize that “special needs” children are eligible for SSI for life? There’s an incentive to have your child labeled retarded).
The author chooses to use the productive measure which implies that being productive is in some was snobbish and not a positive trait we should encourage. That’s a leftist moral equivalent argument the left has successfully used to undermine all the virtues of western civilization in order to normalize the abnormal.
No, some people are more productive than others and their hard work, intelligence and determination should be praised and held up as a standard for others to aspire to.
Others, like the downs syndrome or autistic children, are to be loved and appreciated for making us better human beings as we appreciate fully the wonders of the talents we are given. It’s a different measurement altogether.
It was all I could do to raise a couple of “normal” kids. I have nothing but the highest regard for those who are able to love and nurture so-called “special needs” children.
Another thing to never say to your kids is “you can’t do anything right.” It will stay with them their entire life.
The left has a problem with these kids because they’re not perverted kind of not-normal. They’re gifted kind of not-normal.
Everyone, these kids too, have a useful purpose in life. It’s not apparent to many people. Hell, to the leftists, it’s not apparent with the *normal* kids, either.
