NC: Crosses removed as church becomes a mosque

It won’t be the first mosque in Johnston County, but for now it’s the only one.

On Saturday morning, the Islamic Center of Smithfield will open up in a vacant Pentecostal church, taking over the four-acre property and parsonage on Brightleaf Boulevard with future plans for a worship and community center and school. Helping to open the mosque will be local Christian clergy, hoping to strike a welcoming and respectful tone for two faiths of similar origins in a shared community.

Crosses have been removed from the former church’s facade and steeple, and Ali Mohammad, an organizer of the mosque and a Smithfield business owner, said they’ll be handed over to the group of pastors as a show of good faith.

“We want to be friendly with all our neighbors and let them know we’re there,” Mohammad said. “It’s open faith; we’re brothers.”

  1. “Pastor Jim Melnyk, who leads St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Smithfield, will be one of the Christian church leaders taking part in Saturday’s ceremony. He said Christianity and Islam share common origins and scriptures and that he felt it was important to participate in the mosque opening as a sign of mutual respect.”

Common origins and scriptures???? I would’ve known this “pastor” was Episcopalian without being told. And the clueless Episcopal Church wonders why its numbers are sagging? I left in disgust 9 years ago. Good riddance.

  2. If there are enough of Satan’s followers to open a mosque, there are too many of them. Send them all back. Confiscate their property as repayment to the government for all they illegally stole/cheated/lied to get.

There’s a heap of kumbaya Blasphemy and Idiocy right there. That flock better RUN from their ‘shepherd’.
My Mother was never a good driver, and Dad could not teach her, so she got her license via the Sears Driving School and we always joked about that.
But I never would have guessed that Sears also ran a Divinity School !

  4. Anonymous, I don’t know about that, but if it works for them? Oh well. I’m old fashioned. Finding a peaceful place in the woods, eyes closed, just me and the Lord. Seems to work just fine. Quiet and sacred churches work too.

  5. I triple dog dare the Episcopalians (or any other Christian religion) to buy a mosque somewhere and convert it to a church.
    – Let’s see how that goes

  6. “We want to be friendly with all our neighbors and let them know we’re there,” Mohammad said. “It’s open faith; we’re brothers.”

…they WANT you to recognize “Allah” (a different god than revealed in the Bible) and the “prophet” Mohammad who testified of him. When you don’t, and rightly so, there is no friendship, there is no brotherhood.

Jesus Christ fulfilled the requirements of the Law and offers salvation, freely, by grace through faith in Him and his finished work on our/your behalf. Mohammad came along 6 centuries later and resurrected a new set of laws for man to follow, with a salvation devoid of grace and a “heaven” abundant with earthly enticements. The Bible and the Koran are incompatible testimonies; Mohammedans and Christians do not worship the same God as the two differ according to their very natures.

  7. It’s coming whether you believe it or not: a single worldwide economy/government/religion, embodied in one beloved peacemaker, the false Christ who will declare himself to be God.
