OAN Newsroom

45-year-old Shahedul Islam, a Bangladeshi diplomat in New York, is charged with labor trafficking and assault.

The country’s deputy consul general was indicted Monday for forcing one of his servants into slavery through threats and intimidation.

Court records say the diplomat allegedly took away the Bangladeshi helper’s passport, and made him work 18 hours a day with no pay.

While the envoy does have limited diplomatic immunity, the judge ordered him to give up his passport.

He’s being held on a $50,000 bond, and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

His next court date is set for June 28th.
