NYC eases severity of laws against public urination, drunkenness

FOX: New Yorker City residents and visitors may see more public urination soon. That’s because the city council has decided that such activity will now draw a civil ticket, like breaking the speed limit, rather than a criminal summons.

The council — in a move that mirrors a similar action in Denver — also downgraded the severity of similar offenses, like public drunkenness. Instead of going before a criminal judge, offenders will be required to attend an administrative hearing.

 

The shift in policy is the result of the Criminal Justice Reform Act and critics say that it undermines the city’s long-time “broken windows” policing policy in which cracking down on minor offenses, like public urination, is deemed to prevent more serious crime from occurring, according to the New York Post.  MORE

  10. Back in the early 90s the Boston subway system used to have homeless drunks passed out in the stations with rivers of piss flowing from them. I guess they were ahead of their time.

  14. I used to visit The City as a teenager, before Giuliani, and the first thing I’d notice upon stepping off the train from LI was the pissy smell – and it was everywhere. After Mayor Rudy started cleaning things up, much less stink. Bo Dietl is running for Mayor next election and he is great. He can turn The City back around if people will show up and vote. Super low turnout last election played a big role in electing Red Bill DeBlasio.

  19. Minor offenses like public urination/defecation can be cause to revoke the green card or rapefugee status of Leftist Alliance invaders. A Musloid is just as like to crap in a street cafe and sling feces with his left hand than use a toilet; he doesn’t know any better a the Left doesn’t want him civilized.
