Tesla Car Batteries Not Remotely Green, Study Finds

Breitbart:

The car batteries used in a Tesla generate as much CO2 as driving a gasoline-powered car for eight years. And that’s before they even come off the production line.

This news, from a study by the Swedish Environmental Research Institute, will no doubt delight all those U.S. taxpayers who have been forking out billions of dollars to prop up Tesla’s share price having been assured by their government that subsidizing overpriced electric cars represents a vital step towards “combatting climate change.”

The report, commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Energy Agency, cannot easily be dismissed because it is a meta-analysis (ie a summary) of all the available studies on the subject.  more here

  1. Baaaahhhhaaaaaa. Progressives ‘gotch ya’, again. Don’t you just love it when the truth slaps sheeple in the face?

Of course, the truth isn’t allowed to slap them I need the face, because the MSM government patsy tabloids are so good at the turning a pile of 💩 Into a ❄️🌈.

  2. @ted: they’re lithium ion batteries.
They also contain cobalt, if they can get it in the first place.

If there is ever an EMP with a neutron component, cobalt 59 can be converted to cobalt 60. Therein lays a very major problem, say for about 5.5 years or so. Lithium batteries would not be a friend should that ever happen.

  3. This study doesn’t matter; if I am driving a Tesla, I feel superior to you. No, that’s not right – I am superior to you. Don’t harsh that feeling with facts.

  4. The jig is up!
Although “green” energy seems like a wonderful idea, the “green” companies all seem to all rely heavily on taxpayer subsidies.
When it takes 4-5 gallons of gasoline to produce 1 gallon of ethanol then something is seriously wrong with the “green” energy picture. And so it goes with every one of these so-called green companies.
If a company can’t fly on its own wings then it deserves to crash.
People seem to be finally waking up to this sham. Hopefully, we won’t continue to waste billions more.

  5. If the government has to subsidize a product that is a guarantee that it is not worth a steaming pile of …. [you can fill in the blank].

So glad that the electricity fairies and unicorns recharge the batteries every night with rainbows and no-CO2 magic.

  6. What they don’t mention is the battery loses 1/3 of its range by the time it’s 8 years old, and Tesla has said that the replacement cost is about $30,000. That being said, you can buy the pre-paid replacement option for $12,000:
    1) battery degrades everyday
    2) battery degradation is non-linear over time; meaning it starts very very slow, but after 4-5 years, it gets faster
    3) after the first 5 years, degradation may be as low as 5%. But by the 8th year, they expect about 30% degradation.
    4) every evening, performance statistics are collected from all the cars and battery performance is assessed. If a few cars are degrading substantially faster than the cohort, TM will proactively call the customer and ask him/her to come over for a battery inspection/replacement.
    5) there is an average rate of battery degradation that they expect (their models predict), but they are not publicizing that. The actual rate of degradation will be determined by the average performance of all the cars.
    6) last, but not least, because TM really cares about its reputation and credibility, if they feel degradation on a car is normal, but the customer is very unsatisfied, for reputation’s sake, TM will most likely provide a replacement.”
