State budget cuts are putting stress on public universities, some of which are resorting to renting out empty dorm rooms to earn cash amid tight financial circumstances.
The University of Missouri, one of the biggest football schools in the state, will rent out dorms this fall for visitors who want to stay to see the team play. The starting rate for a “furnished two-bedroom suite with four single beds” is $120 per night plus tax, according to the school’s website Opens a New Window.. The plea for extra cash at the University of Missouri comes amid declining enrollment and a decrease in finances. Enrollment is expected to drop by 14 percent for the coming school year and the university said it plans to eliminate a total of 474 jobs next year as $55 million will be slashed from its budget in fiscal year 2018. The state government cut $68 million Opens a New Window., or 8 percent, in core funding to colleges and universities for the current budget year.
Missouri is not the only state where universities are tightening their belts. In Illinois, where Moody’s downgraded the credit ratings of five public universities to junk level amid an ongoing two-year budget impasse, the University of Illinois at Chicago Opens a New Window.(UIC) offers guest housing in residences “intended for short-term stays by those other than UIC students” for rates as low as $100 per night for a one bedroom apartment.
If the University has a great library, what a wonderful opportunity for a researcher.
But who would want to put up with the unpleasant and possibly dangerous shenanigans of the students.
Let them get their liberalism in, PHUCKEM in the drive
through and make them declare bankruptcy.
Talk About Great Cover for a Drug Dealer, He wouldn’t need to Leave His Room ! All the Women He Could Want, Free Booze and a Bed You’ll Pay For With Srare Change !
What goes up, must come down. Gravity will not be defied.
The Immutable Law of Unintended Consequences strikes again……
Wonder what the room rates include? Safe space rooms – free speech suites – Political Correct corners – Rainbow floors –
The possibilities are endless.
I noticed the article blame the decline on the cut in federal funds–nothing about the violence and all the upheaval on campus by the snowflakes.
Oh that’s nice. Will they vet the renters to insure the safety of the dorm residents? What happens to safety zones for Snowflake meltdowns?
Cash strapped?
I should be so “cash strapped.”
Total University Funds: $3,139,677,312 (FY 2016)
“… $55 million will be slashed from its budget …”
1.75% is a “slash?” Sounds like BULLSHIT to me.

islamo delenda est …
Americans are realizing that student loans are a bad deal and have put many in eternal debt for a worthless “education”. The gravy train is over for these piece-of-shit liberal institutions.
These leftist indoctrination schools are going to get hit harder when their new graduates refuse to donate to their colleges. Sure they see a decline already from current alumni because of their antics but if they expect these “I want everything free snowflakes” to contribute in the future they had better wake up!
Before renting rooms they need to cut administrative costs by 90%. Fire all the ‘assistants’, cut the wages of the top dogs down to what they’re actually worth, maybe 5 grand a month. Have them manage a McDonalds in the summer so they appreciate what cushy jobs they have the other 9 months of the year.
University of Missouri got what it deserved. Who would send there kid there after all the leftist crap spewed out by the faculty and leftist students. How long did it take them to fire the reheated bitch who threatened reporters by asking for “muscle”?
Hiw long before the Universities are taking fed money to resettle “refugees” in the dorms? Kids, if you smell goat cooking over charcoal, transfer immediately.
OTOH, that would mask the smell of a bong pretty well.
Refugee housing. 12 lice-infested jihadis cooking rice on a bed of charcoal that used to be the toilet. The near future for Evergreen College.
As for Mizzou, clean sweep. Fire everybody, eradicate the Leftists.
Start with a strong ROTC and a good 12-month Trade school and rebuild the school around those.
Oh, and Melissa Glick needs to spend her next 30 years stamping license plates.
