Man says he killed his wife after taking too much cough medicine

29-year-old aspiring pastor Matthew Phelps has been charged with murdering his wife, after he claimed he took too much cough medicine before finding her fatally stabbed beside him.

Phelps called 911 on Friday just after 1 a.m. to report that he had killed his wife Lauren Phelps, also 29, at their home in Raleigh, North Carolina:

“I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor. There’s blood all over me, and there’s a bloody knife on the bed. I think I did it. I can’t believe I did this.”

Phelps said he took Coricidin, a cough and cold medicine, because it made him “feel good” and because he couldn’t sleep at night.   MORE

  3. If hilary, wad of phlegm that she is, had taken that cough medicine, she might have offed bernie, and maybe had a better campaign without the coughing fits.

    I think I’ll go with the BS on this, too.

  4. i don’t know.. when i was waaaay younger I used to get wasted on various things- pot-LSD- wine- beer etc and the next day I couldn’t remember what i had done the night before until some one told me. Been over 50 years since I’ve been in a bar or did drugs. Now all i take is blood pressure med’s. Cough medicine can be mind altering if the kid drank to much to “make him feel good” as he says. I can’t judge what happened to this poor girl- but God knows so I’ll leave it in His hands.

  6. About two years ago, my wife had a bad cold. She took two hits of NyQuil and within 20 minutes, turned into a mad woman. She threatened to kill me and herself, becoming more violent by the minute. Finally after about an hour, she calmed down and I got her to rest. She has a vague memory of the event, and now is very wary of any kind of medication.

    We are happily married for 22 years, and I had never seen that person before.

  16. I will say that it’s a possibility, buuuuut I need to know what was going on between them in their life together to convince me he wasn’t trying to kill her for some insurance or because he had a girlfriend, boyfriend, too chicken to divorce her, etc.

  18. I remember reading about a case in AZ. several years ago, a dude got off using the somnambulism defense. Apparently he drove to his mother in law’s house at 2am or so, got a knife from her kitchen drawer and “accidently” stabbed her 27 times.

  19. How do you accidentally stab your mother in law 27 times and not know it? Fortunately I had a very good mother in law. Was he listening at some point to the old song Mother in law by Ernie K. Dowe sometime before he accidentally stabbed her and subliminally was driven crazy by that song enough to kill his m i l? Some of the words were, “Satan should her name, to me they’re just abut the same.”
