NFL Ratings Down Big on Opening Night Amid Renewed Anthem Protests

The NFL opened its 2017 season Thursday night, in much the same way that it played out the 2016 season. The game featured the team that won the final game of the year last season, the game was high-scoring with plenty of offense, the game featured an anthem protest, and the league’s ratings went down.

The game between the Chiefs and the Patriots drew a 14.6 overnight rating on NBC.  That rating is down nearly two full points from last year’s 16.5 number for the Panthers-Broncos opener, and more than three points down from the Steelers-Patriots opener in 2015.

Why, the steep decline?

While the ratings have clearly trended down for a number of seasons, last night’s game did feature an anthem protest from Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters, and it’s entirely likely that many tuned-out after seeing that:  MORE

  2. I don’t know about the rest of you but I now believe that NFL football games have become boring and uninteresting! Maybe they need to become like the gladiator contests of old and be to the death, i.e., the last man standing!

  3. I know I quit watching. I used to watch two games on Sunday, Monday night, and Thursday.

    It all started when the networks began letting Bob Costas editorialize during the play by play. Then Goodell began running Moody’s “Let’s Move 360” B.S.. Then followed more and more Obama love.

    Hijacking the Espys to suck Bruce Jenner’s dick and shaming anyone who didn’t applaud while covering up for every wifebeating, drug dealing, dui-murdering felon. Although they did throw the book at the white guy for throwing a ball with 11 lbs of pressure in it rather than 13.

    Then, they started supporting anti-American pieces of shit spitting in the faces of everyone in attendance to their overpriced, under-entertaining games. Screw over the cities that supported their shit teams for decades by moving them to markets that will fail.

    So, I’m done. I hope they fail and their athletes can get back to earning under 35k a year like most of their Sociology degrees are worth.

  7. It’s easy for me not to watch, since I live north of the People’s Repulic of Detroit. The Lions haven’t been a contender for anything since 1957. As for watching any other team, I’ll stick with college ball, until the communist scum ruin that.

  11. Last year I found I can get a lot done during that three hours on Sunday that I used to waste watching a football game.
    And once you break the habit, the games do seem boring, uninteresting and inconsequential, like Ready, set, go! says above.

    I spent four years in the Marines in service to the United States. Now I have these shitheads telling me they can’t even stand still for three minutes in honor of our country? That’s fine, they can do that if they want, but don’t expect me to then watch your game and root for you. Not gonna happen. Kiss my ass.

  12. I don’t watch the games anymore. I just play the pools. I could care less who wins or loses as long as my numbers come in. I’m ahead these last four years. Two big Super Bowl wins in a row.
    Was there a guy named Brady or Bradley involved? I forget.
    There is a super funny video out there about a guy named Payton Manning in a retirement home. Hilarious. Check it out.
    Asswipes who refuse to stand for the National Anthem should be banned from the show, game, whatever.

    We’re watching 3rd quarter of the Ohio State/OK Sooners game. At least these guys have done any dumb stunts. Maybe i’ll take up watching curling. How rowdy can those people get?

  15. I love the OLD Pro Football. Guys like Howie Long were my hero’s growing up. The Blackening of Pro Football has ruined it for me. More Blacks play the game than whites. So it looks like the NFL has a target market of 12% of the population. I’m not the only honkey that’s not watching that shit. I’ll go to the range. Figure it out.

  37. Watching a bunch of spoiled, overpaid, entitled, and outdated farm equipment play a kids game while refusing to honor the country that allowed them to make millions of dollars doing so, leaves me pretty much happy that I have never been a fan of the Idiot Box, nor the stupid BS of sports.
    Anyone that actually spends money to do so does not have any brains, imo. They would be known around here as SUCKERS.
