Psychologist says Christmas music is bad for your mental health

FOX: Stressing before Christmas? Listening to the cheerful, jolly music will not help you relax, a British psychologist said.

In fact, listening to Christmas music could harm a person’s mental health, clinical psychologist Linda Blair told Sky News.

Blair said the continuous playing of Christmas music in the car or at stores reminds people of all the things they need to do before the holiday arrives.

“You’re simply spending all of your energy trying not to hear what you’re hearing,” Blair told Sky News.

Blair said store workers were “more at risk” of being mentally drained by the array of cheerful music. The same songs being played constantly makes it hard for employees to “tune it out” and “unable to focus on anything else.”  MORE

  1. And it reminds atheists that there is a God in Heaven who loves us so much He sent a part of Himself to us. They can’t stand that. They think He is a hateful creature so they prefer to hate back.

  2. I suspect not-so-great Britain will out-law Christmas Music so as not to offend their growing number of returning murderous islamic terrorists.
“Silent Night” will be deemed hate speech.

  3. What a ditz. I’ll agree that too much playing (like all the time, everywhere you go) may have you finding yourself naked, painted blue and sitting on the roof with a rifle however for the most part it has you feeling nostalgic and warm not panicked and crazed. Besides, she’s from Britain and it’s not like their going to be able to listen to any Christmas music in a few years. Well, maybe in a dark basement with an outlawed Ipod turned down low in the middle of the night before morning prayers are called from the closest minaret.

  4. I have to admit that I do find commercial Christmas music uninteresting at best and irratiting much of the time. Sacred Christmas music, on the other hand, I enjoy very much. I think my favorite would have to be O Holy Night.

  5. I’m very selective about what Christmas music is played and when. Having been a waiter and also working in retail, with the Xmas loop playing over and over and over and over makes one detest it

Plus I don’t much care for pop music Christmas.
I will strangle anyone who sings Santa Baby. Good God.

We usually start Christmas morning with Handel’s Messiah. Then Elvis Costello and the Chieftains. Love that. Maybe a little Bing or Nat or Frank.

    After that…..it’s over.

    Christmas music overdose is real.

  6. In about 5 years there will be no need to ever take you Christmas lights down. Christmas decoration were on display way before Halloween at our local Home Depot. Bass Pro shops is advertising Pre Pre Black Friday sales.

  7. Anyone who ever had to work retail, for an 8 or 9 hour shift during the holiday season will agree with clinical psychologist Linda Blair. It was 50 years ago, but I still have PTSD from it.

  8. One thing I can tell you about Christmas music, if your 10 year old little brother listens to Christmas music all year long he might be a little light in the loafers. He was always a little different that way.

  9. That’s it y’all. Retailers have ruined Christmas and what represents. You’re not doing Christmas properly unless you give your spouse a shiny new BMW with an oversized bow on it.

  10. The problem with her case is every store has music, during the entire year, on a loop with minimal changes during the year. So why isn’t it driving her crazy the rest of the year? If you walk into a grocery store every day at 5pm, you will hear the same song. It’s not the music, its the stress of buying gifts you can’t afford. But she’s just going to pick on Christmas music when the real problem is you don’t have the money or that nobody invited you for turkey because you’re the family asshole. Deal with it, quit trying to guilt trip people, and leave everyone else the hell alone to enjoy decking their damned halls with boughs of holly and shit.

  11. Forgot to add, the only people with an excuse to have Christmas decor out early are craft stores and the Christmas Tree shops. And I still can’t get an answer to why the Halloween store is open from july to late november. lol

  12. I didn’t read the article, but ya, I get sick of it real quick. A little of the old stuff goes a long way, at home maybe. Santa Baby and all should be burnt with flame throwers.

  13. I remember the excitement of Christmas. Back in the days when we didn’t have much.
Once I had everything physical, everything that could be bought, I wished for things I can’t purchase.

I’d gladly take a hug and a backslap from everyone for Christmas, but only after we listen to Mr. Hanky’s Christmas Poo.

One of these days I’ll be worthy to comment here.

  14. Let’s see…yesterday I thought about the cookies
today I got out the recipes an checked for ingredients
am on a roll now. Noted on the calendar Bake on Monday.
    Wish me luck. Ha!

  15. Do me a solid and send me some @Annie.

Hmmm. When was the last time I had the most simple Christmas cookie ever? Anise cookies.

Dang. Gotta make some tomorrow. Icing not required

  16. My personal favorites are The Birth Of Jesus by John Michael Talbot, A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi, just because, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart, Bach and other very good classical music appropriate to the Christmas season. I can not stand crappy commercial Xmas music AKA the usual same ol, same ol junk they play every year to death. And I especially hate Blue Christmas by Elvis. No Christmas music should be allowed until after Thanksgiving and then end as soon as possible after Christmas. Don’t get me wrong I love Christmas and good music to celebrate it and not all the ear worm junk that’s played over and over till you get sick of it every year. Crappy Christmas music turns me into a Grinch.

  17. Christmas music always lifts my spirits and makes me more productive. I listen to it as early as possible (so right around now I’d when I start).

The only ‘bad’ Christmas music is the dog barking songs or Santa Baby.
