Why AG Sessions declined to appoint a special counsel

American Thinker:

A lot of conservatives are upset that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has declined for now to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate claims of FBI abuses in surveilling the Trump campaign, and in declining to investigate the Uranium One deal, followed by well over a hundred million dollars of donations to Clinton family-controlled charities by parties benefitting from approval of that sale.  CNN first broke the story, obtaining a four-page letter that Sessions sent to Senator Grassley, and Representatives Goodlatte and Gowdy, who had requested a special counsel.

Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch: (Full disclosure: I am an enthusiastic donor)

Major fail from DOJ! AG Sessions writes he tasked a lawyer to investigate whether to investigate the Clinton/Obama abuses! No wonder @RealDonaldTrump is frustrated.

Mark Meadows, Chairman of the Freedom Caucus, was no less upset:

So the Obama DOJ can open a legally questionable investigation into the Trump campaign—allegedly based on a campaign volunteer mouthing off at a London bar—but this DOJ can’t appoint a second special counsel after all the troubling documents we’ve seen?

Disappointing

But, for the moment, at least, I see good reason for Sessions to take this position. In the letter, Sessions noted that he has asked the DOJ’s Inspector General Horowitz to investigate these matters, and, in a new disclosure, tasked US Attorney John W. Huber to investigate. Huber serves in Utah, far from the beltway, and was first appointed US Attorney by President Obama, and reappointed by Trump.

First of all, while the IG cannot convene a grand jury and subpoena witnesses outside the DOJ’s employees, Huber can. And the IG can and does make criminal referrals. There is tremendous inside expertise on the DOJ resident in the IG’s organization, meaning that there is no start-up delay and no learning curve in getting to work on abuses. So, with the IG digging up information, and referring it to Huber, further steps, including subpoenas to former DOJ and FBI employees, such as Andrew McCabe and James Comey, can be taken before a grand jury in Utah.  Any indictments issued by that grand jury presumably could be tried before a federal jury in Utah, whereas a special counsel would most likely work with courts in the District of Columbia, Virginia, or Maryland, beltway strongholds. Which jury pool would you prefer? The District of Columbia or Utah?   more

  1. Because he has ALL the KLIN – TON/Obama holdovers working for him on THIS boondoggle? 😡

Yeah… THAT should get to the bottom of things… by the late 28th century… 🙄

  2. Sessions would be wise to give the public some indication that he is pursuing these criminals robustly. We have seen little indication that he deems this mess anymore than an annoyance. He’s lost a lot of respect people once had for him and he seems oblivious to that also.
Either he is denser than lead or Rosenstein is manipulating him, either way he doesn’t have the horsepower for this job at this time.

  3. Too many scurvy dogs in this race.
The Clinton’s are masters of covering trails and 0bama is no slouch either. A government career has nothing to do with statesmanship. Plenty of dirt to go around. The DNC sold out first and Republicans followed willingly.

It’s no wonder why the lesser minds seek out socialism today. They don’t know what to do about the run away corruption and they foolishly believe government will fix itself. They have been raised to conform. Sheep to slaughter.

It’s a hell of a mess to clean up. My prayers are with Trump.

  5. The IG report being dangled like a carrot for months now, get the damn thing out there and get moving, I’m sick of this foot dragging . Everything moves with the speed of typical government workers, like plants growing if you’re watching you’ll never see any movement.

  6. Sessions is a swamp creature, as are most of the GOP in Congress. They’re worthless fucks, handing or country over to champaign communist motherfuckers without even trying to put up a resistance, even when they ostensibly control both Congress and the White House. The only question going forward is just how fucking worthless is the GOP at combatting the DNC Death-to-America agenda? The answer appears to be… almost completely.

  7. The problem is the fake media and the brainwashed progs. There is no point in tipping them off about pending indictments; they will just whine and howl about fascist Trump and….

Many, within the FBI, now have “turned” and are cooperating. When it hits, the enormity of the indictments will — I hope — overwhelm the fake news and their prog useful idiots that all will be well, the ship of state will have turned and… ….MAGA. ….Lady in Red

  8. Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock… the statutes of limitations approaches!

Indeedy. Hillary knows all she has to do is stonewall the release of documents long enough to beat the S.o.L. or the Grim Reaper. I predict court cases out the wazoo over document subpoenas.

“Oh, that’s OLD news; did you hear what Trump did yesterday?”
