Lawsuit leads to revelations about David Copperfield’s act

Reno Gazette Journal: LAS VEGAS — Jurors got a rare behind-the-scenes look at a David Copperfield disappearing act Tuesday during testimony in a negligence lawsuit involving a British man who claims he was badly hurt when he fell while participating in a 2013 Las Vegas show.

The magician’s friend and executive producer, Chris Kenner, revealed to jurors the mystery behind a signature Copperfield illusion that appeared to make about a dozen audience members vanish together onstage.

Practiced stagehands with flashlights hurried randomly chosen participants through dark curtains, down unfamiliar passageways, around corners, outdoors, indoors and through an MGM Grand resort kitchen in time to re-enter the back of the theater for their “reappearance” during the show finale, Kenner testified.

“Is that route an obstacle course?” asked Benedict Morelli, attorney for Gavin Cox, a resident of Kent, England, who claims lasting brain and bodily injuries from his fall have cost him more than $400,000 in medical care.  MORE

  1. Given the state of their country, I am naturally cynical when I hear a person from England files a suit claiming brain damage.

What “damage” is from genetics and what was from the alleged injury that reportedly caused brain damage?

Prince Charles is a good point of reference.

  2. This guy is a magnet for lawsuits. LOL. He’s a magician but can’t get out of them. I swear, every single year, this dude’s in the news in Las Vegas for harassment, abuse, property agreement violations, exes pissed off about something or other, employees not being paid… Just anything and everything you can throw at him. But hey, he’s working tonight at the MGM in Las Vegas.

  3. Q. Mr. Cox, how do you feel about Muslims migrating to the UK?

    A. I don’t like it. They are changing English culture for the worse. We need common sense immigration laws, we need to finally get out of the EU, we need to protect our women, and we need to allow private ownership of firearms to protect ourselves.

Judge: Ladies and gentlemen, this conclusively proves that the accident actually cured Mr. Cox of his brain damage. Case dismissed.

  4. Seems he would pay off some of the lawsuits rather than reveal secrets.

I saw a magic act in Vegas involving a huge tiger in an elevated cage in the middle of the stage. The guy threw a black blanket over the cage then immediately pulled it off and the tiger was gone. In less than one second. Simply amazing, however it was done.

  5. “In other news, David Copperfield’s magic hat rabbit, Zelda, has filed charges against
the legendary magician, claiming to have suffered years of sexual hare-assment.”
