President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.
On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.
The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. –afd.defense.gov
You’re welcome.
Whenever, wherever, however you served, THANK YOU! Those of us you kept safe and free owe you a debt we can never repay, except by making sure you are cared for and appreciated. God Bless you all.
It still irritates me that they feel compelled to include the Coast Guard in it…not to denigrate their service, but they are not military. They’re a law enforcement agency of the treasury department.
Your Welcome!
The coast guard did serve in Vietnam in the Delta. There must have been some casualties.
God bless everybody! I’d still do it again.
Most of us older vets would do it again as well. Although it would be a lot harder at 65 then when I was 19-22 years old. I can still get around but not as fast as I used to. Even as much as I griped a lot about the Navy when I was in it was the best thing I ever did and I had more responsibility as a 21-22 yr. old Plane Captain than any other job I’ve ever had since then. The Navy taught how me to work hard, responsibility, loyalty etc. and to love this country more than I did before I joined the Navy. It was well worth it and I wouldn’t be the same if I had never joined or sat it out or avoided it like so many others did during the Vietnam era. And besides how many other guys can say that they worked on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
Shout out to all those Airmen, Marines, Soldiers, Sailors and Coast Guard for stepping up and defending our country.
My father was in the Coast Guard, ’43-’45, Chief Petty Officer, Ice breaking bouy tender then converted for the war.
Brother was a KC-135 re-fueler over the skies of Viet Nam
’71-’73.
Grandfather, 51st Infantry, WWI, Western France,
St-Michel-Meruse, 1917-1918.

@Obamaplease ~ the Coast Guard has been in existence since 1790 (older than the Navy) … they were a part of the US Treasury before 1967 when it was transferred to the Department of Transportation … after 9-11 it was transferred to DHS … during declared war it can be transferred to the DoD under the Department of the Navy.
… the other 4 branches of the Armed Services are under the DoD
(btw, there are 7 uniformed armed services, not 4 or 5)
