Mentally ‘Disabled’ College Students on the Rise

Breitbart: The number of college students labeled with depression, anxiety, and other psychological problems is increasing, leading colleges and universities to provider a greater number of special accommodations for them.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, as many as 25 percent of students enrolled in elite colleges are now classified as depressed, anxious, attention-impaired, and other labels that, under federal law, entitle them to special learning accommodations. Some students are labeled with more than one disability.

A simple note from a doctor allows a student to be classified as “disabled” and requires a school to provide the accommodations that correspond to his or her “disability.” An accommodation can be additional time to take an exam, seating preference in classrooms, permission to bring an animal to school for comfort, or other methods considered to optimize learning.

For example, at Pomona College in Claremont, California – a school that tied for the number six ranking in National Liberal Arts Colleges at U.S. News’s Best Colleges – 22 percent of students were classified as “disabled” this academic year, an increase of five percent since 2014. more here

  1. 1. Already officially classified “Disabled “ at 18? Fast work.

    2. If we suspend voting rights for the “mentally disabled”, the Left will never win an election again.

    3. Notice the article’s deliberate blurring of actual physical cognitive problems, ie dyslexia, or long term brain injury trauma, with mere “mood” complaints—subjective anxiety and general nervousness.

    No accident.

  2. If “Brother Tom’s P.O.Box Divinity School” can make you a “Master of Civil Engineering,” I don’t see a “truth in advertising” problem. If not, then why are these titles being sold not clearly labeled as being from the “School for the Disabled”?

    > Most of the students were well rounded young people until they began taking classes.

But in accredited education, size doesn’t matter.

  4. A nice young normal person enters college at 18, and when he or she leaves at 22, is covered with tats, has a bad liver from too many frat parties, is either a rapist or a rapee, is stoned all the time, has zero job prospects, lives with mom & dad, uses a bicycle for transporation, and believes wholeheartedly in Marxism. (exaggerated to make a point).

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

  5. To the Anonymous Organgrinder – Yup!
Teach ’em mental illness and they’ll act like they’re mentally ill.
Teach them that they can self-identify as the opposite sex or their favorite animal, teach them that they have their own new language, teach them Common Core, teach them to fear dodgeball, teach them to be pussified, teach them the irrationality of the Left and yes you will cultivate a new generation of imbeciles who basically never grow up! The Leftist Communists have been very busy for the past few decades haven’t they?

  6. Every year the odds increase that we’ll run into these nervous, neurotic people in the course of our days. Thankfully, it’s probably less likely in the real professions like accounting or medicine (although the latter has its own problems).

  7. Here we go again..the left manipulating language.

    Gee what a surprise…

The ADA – Americans with Disabilities Act – George Bush the First- IF anything should be the Americans with A REAL Disabilities… Act.

The ‘intent’ of the law was meant for ya grandma or grandpa, walking around or in a wheelchair or BLIND.

Elevators everywhere! A basic requirement for complete access.

Now people with a real mental ‘disability’ senses can be deadened and therefore ADA helps BUT with lib/leftist college students there IS NO Federal law that can help them…

Someone tell POTUS that this is something that needs…

    RE-NEGOTIATNG!

  8. Neighbors are a married couple of State U professors. Nearing 70. Education majors.

Pleasant enough, but as slow, complacent and ambitionless as a couple of Black Angus.

Without government jobs, I can’t imagine any employer who’d have them. The service industry doesn’t pay much, and automation/forced self service is about to eliminate the food service and light-janitorial jobs.

When the education industry finally switches to AI, what will become of all these faculty drones? No, really.

Brace for millions of PhDs suddenly applying for SS Disability.

  9. I wonder if I could get a shrink to write me something saying I have a phobia of dogs, and so cannot be forced to be around them.

Whose disability wins? The phobic being forced into an “unsafe space”, or the overgrown baby who needs a “comfort animal”?

  10. Ironically, the college “professionals” want to talk to the Trump voters as they see them as not “normees”. But in reality they need to talk to the Hillary and Bernie voters.
