LARRY ELDER- Slavery: What They Didn’t Teach in My High School

TOWN HALL:

A man I have known since grade school changed his name, years ago, to an Arabic one. He told me he rejected Christianity as “the white man’s religion that justified slavery.” He argued Africans taken out of that continent were owed reparations. “From whom?” I asked.

Arab slavers took more Africans out of Africa and transported them to the Middle East and to South America than European slavers took out of Africa and brought to North America. Arab slavers began taking slaves out of Africa beginning in the ninth century — centuries before the European slave trade — and continued well after.

In “Prisons & Slavery,” John Dewar Gleissner writes: “The Arabs’ treatment of black Africans can aptly be termed an African Holocaust. Arabs killed more Africans in transit, especially when crossing the Sahara Desert, than Europeans and Americans, and over more centuries, both before and after the years of the Atlantic slave trade. Arab Muslims began extracting millions of black African slaves centuries before Christian nations did. Arab slave traders removed slaves from Africa for about 13 centuries, compared to three centuries of the Atlantic slave trade. African slaves transported by Arabs across the Sahara Desert died more often than slaves making the Middle Passage to the New World by ship. Slaves invariably died within five years if they worked in the Ottoman Empire’s Sahara salt mines.”

My name-changing friend did not know that slavery occurred on every continent except Antarctica. MORE HERE

  1. IF your union funded bullshit education system does not teach it, it must not have happened right? We are turning out blooming idiots from schools these days and it is going to be the death of our nation soon enough. We might have delayed it with this past election, but there is no way to stop the idiocy coming out of school right now and eventually if will be the path to Socialism or Communism and then this great nation dies……read Alinsky’s path in Rules for Radicals and you will see how every step he suggests is being owned by libtards from controlling Health Care, schools and the media.

  2. If intelligent people told all the idiots of the world the truth about things, there would be a deafening sound of the collective shrieks of “la, la, la, la” accompanied by the dopes sticking their fingers in their ears, to avoid hearing it.
In militant Arab and libland, ignorance is not only bliss, but a requirement.

  3. Excellent essay! I’ve read Sowell’s “Black Rednecks and White Liberals.” If you get a chance, put it on your list of required reading. A description from the recommendations:

“This explosive new book challenges many of the long-prevailing assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on not only the trendy intellectuals of our times but also such historic interpreters of American life as Alexis de Tocqueville and Frederick Law Olmsted. In a series of long essays, this book presents an in-depth look at key beliefs behind many mistaken and dangerous actions, policies, and trends. It presents eye-opening insights into the historical development of the ghetto culture that is today wrongly seen as a unique black identity–a culture cheered on toward self-destruction by white liberals who consider themselves “friends” of blacks. An essay titled “The Real History of Slavery” presents a jolting re-examination of that tragic institution and the narrow and distorted way it is too often seen today.”

  4. I did not know some of these facts, but despite the fact that Mr. Elder cited his sources, this does not fit in my world view so as an insensitive progressive jerk, I reject it.

  5. It’s why the present is so important regarding who owns it – it is our future and we know that whoever wins gets to write the future.

  6. From what I have read the Europeans showed up on the west African coast seeking trade and gold. What they found the local rulers had to trade were slaves. A market already established from hundreds of years supplying Arab slavers & local market.

Slaves captured by local rulers (and not caught by white slavers as depicted in the movie Roots). Rulers such as King Tegbessou of Dahomey (modern day Republic of Benin)(alternately Tegbesu or Tegesibu). Who is reported to have increased slave trade during his reign and earned an income of £250,000/year in 1750. Much more than any European or American slave traders.

And King Álvaro of the Congo who sold slaves to the Portuguese in late 1600s and also helped them establish the Portuguese colony of Angola.

And many other native African rules who where pleased to capture and trade slaves for horses and other European goods.

This ignorant friend and many of his race may suffer from mass Stockholm Syndrome in sympathy with the slavers who were most brutal to them.

    > I’m just seeing an untapped market, Al.

In Antarctica, we prefer to pick our own damn cotton!
    Thank you, very much.
