Berkeley Prof: Teacher evaluations are racist and sexist

American Thinker: The common expression “ivory tower” is used to describe life in academia as insulated from the reality, accountability, and responsibility that are facts of life for people who work in businesses who live or die according to the response of their customers.  But if – and only if – the inhabitants of the ivory tower use their insulation from mundane concerns to pursue knowledge and truth, the resources devoted to insulating academia from day-to-day concerns are well spent.

But left-wing ideologues have taken over and turned campuses into indoctrination centers.  Once the pursuit of truth takes a back seat to political goals, corruption is inevitable.  One signpost of corruption of this mission of pursuit of truth is a desire to suppress information that runs counter to the political goals embraced.  The very concept of scholarship demands that all data be considered and weighed.

That is why this report from Marissa Gentry of Campus Reform is so sickening.

A University of California, Berkeley professor suggested scrapping end-of-semester student evaluations for hiring, promotion, and tenure decisions after claiming that the grades and evaluations are biased against female instructors and people of color.

“Over the next few weeks, students will get the chance to evaluate their professors and TAs.  They’re going to get it wrong,” UC Berkeley history professor Brian DeLay tweeted on Sunday.  “They’ll be harder on women and people of color than on white men.  Tenured white male faculty, in particular, should help their students understand this.”

Disregarding negative customer feedback is a recipe for disaster in business.  Higher education, despite its pretensions, is a business, a huge business, in this country.  Funding tuition with loans and scholarships tends to insulate the immediate customers from making informed buying decisions, and the vast subsidies from governments and donors provide further insulation.  more here

  1. Interesting concept. I had to think back to my college days and I can only fondly remember 4-5 professors that gave a shit about teaching and learning. Mid to late 70’s. But I did develop a drinking problem and learned to talk to girls, so there’s that……”7 years of my life completely down the drain”…ht Bluto Blutarski….

  2. It’s flooding in….. I had a basketball class that was taught by an Assistant basketball coach for the university and it was basketball season so he never showed up. He put up a sign in sheet. 5 minutes in and out and I’m trying to find Cyndi Howard for some lunch time frivolity…..Another class was about “The study of leisure”….. I took it pass/fail and only went to the final….I passed because I had fully interlocked my life skills with the beautiful concept of achieving leisure…..

  3. Bad_Brad –

I saw that earlier today. I thought then than that, yeah, just try it Brennan and many will die. Unlike your communist brethren, we don’t over throw our gov’t by force. You will be hunted.

  4. With the heavy mixture of black, oriental and hispanic students filling the schools these days isn’t it idiotic to assume that white faculty will automatically have an advantage?

  5. If teacher evaluations are racist and sexist, then the logical next step is that student grades are also racist and sexist….. just skip the entire process and give everyone a fake ‘diploma.’

  6. I repeat myself.

Just hand out diplomas and jobs based on racial and sexual percentages.
If, say, 2% of the white population achieves PhD, then hand out PhDs to 2% of the negroes and mexicans (or whatever). Same for MSs, MAs, BSs, BAs, AAs. Do the same with jobs: Force IBM (or GM – again, all of the big corporations) to send a commensurate population of “minorities” paychecks – don’t have to show up or even attend school – take it from birth records – send em the MA or PhD and a regular paycheck. Eliminate “welfare” as we know it. They can sit home sucking on bottles of muscatel and smoking weed. Oh! Send a proportional number of em heroin outfits! Y’know – needles, syringes, spoons, cotton balls – and, of course, some smack.

    It’s only fair!
Level playing field, and all that!

  7. How can grades and evaluations be biased against one group when they’re the same tests and evaluations everyone does? It’s a good thing they’re safely ensconced in an ivory tower; the world chews idiots like that up and spits them out.
