D.C. Moves To Decriminalize Metro Fare Evasion. Because, “People of Color”

DC: WASHINGTON — Washington D.C. moves to join the likes of California, Seattle, Portland and New York next year with the decriminalization of fare evasion on its Metro trains, citing a disproportionate effect of such laws on people of color.

The legislation, which passed 11 to two in the council’s Dec. 4 meeting, was created by D.C. Councilmember Trayon White, who made headlines earlier this year when he accused Jews of controlling the weather.

“I’ve seen with my own eyes and read stories,” said White. “91 percent of citations given were issued to black people.”

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) drafted a letter in response to the bill urging members of the council to consider the financial implications decriminalization would have on the already struggling public transit system.

“Metro loses about $25 million a year due to fare evasion on Metrobus alone,” reads the letter, with the Chair of Metro’s Board of Directors Jack Evans estimating an additional $35-40 million on Metrorail.

“We have a big problem with fare evasion at Metro,” said Evans, who also serves as a councilmember for D.C.’s Ward 2. “And when it is understood that you will just get a civil citation that is largely unenforceable, we’re looking at higher incidents. It will escalate when people realize there really is no penalty.”

Evans cited a recent article that claimed fare evaders on New York’s subway system are costing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority $215 million just this year after Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. announced he was ending criminal charges against offenders.

“When you don’t pay your fare at Metro, you’re stealing,” Evans said. “That’s what you’re doing. It’s just like stealing something from a grocery store. You’re stealing money. So what we are doing is decriminalizing stealing.”  MORE

  1. ya just can’t fix stupid. If fares are not paid by everyone it will penalize those that do by metro having to increase rider rates. What happens when nobody pays fares because they’re able to ride free? Gawd I’m glad I don’t live in DC.

  2. Leads to more cheating and fare evasion, I think. Taxes will rise to pay for the shortfall, I’m thinking.

Am I right, or am I just too old-fashioned in my thinking? Maybe I’m just over the hill and just not hip enough to understand the new way of thinking about economics? Yep, that must be it. I’m on the fast train to coot-ville, or maybe I’m already there.

  3. What about those that are physically unable to jump over the toll-style, because of age or infirmity? Or maybe they are wearing a burka or something that might get caught in the mechanism. That will be viewed as discrimination in their eyes, and they will devise a method for them to also not pay.
We’re going down the drain fast.

  4. …does this mean that Genocide and Slavery will be decriminalized by the U.N.? Seeing as how Black people worldwide are the biggest promoters of both these days, it seems like any enforcement effort against THOSE would disproportionately be against Black people…

  5. …this “disparate impact” theory end game is probably so it can be used to protect Democrats in general, as they would DEFINITELY be disproportionately executed if we actually ENFORCED laws against Treason, seeing as how, uh, THEY’RE THE ONES DOING IT…

  6. 91% of murders in DC are commited by blacks, therefore, murder should be legalized, as murder convictions are disproportionately high in the African American community.

    Theft? Legal
    Rape? Legal.

    Problem solved.

Incidentally. I am waiting for the first court case when a non black jumps the turnstile at the metro. Equal protection, anyone? If some don’t pay nobody pays.

Liberals destroy everything they touch. Everything. Period.

  7. Jet Jaguar, then you should remember that John Derbyshire was fired by NRO for speaking the truth about blacks. Which is another reason that I don’t read or pay attention to NRO anymore. When I was in Wash DC in May 1992 for the National Day of Prayer I had no problems riding the DC Metro system. We were also there just after the Rodney King riots in LA and had no problems except for one hotheaded little Irish American guy from Texas who was with us who wanted to beat the hell out of some blacks, fortunately cooler heads prevailed and he became one of my best friends for a while.

  8. They’ve already decriminalized federal gun laws for prosecuting blacks who use a gun in the commission of a felony.

And yet, still complain about “common sense” gun laws needing to be passed.

  9. Anonymous – Yeah, no kidding. But let me ask you. Is it okay when the next article about white people doing something retarded and illegal, that I should call ALL white people Antifa crackers and then just leave the thread?

  10. I guess I’m going to have to mention that there are black people who read and comment here, people who have half black kids, who are also Conservatives, and we shouldn’t lump them in with the assholes in the story.

  11. I see a possible age of political enlightenment for blacks in the making, and I’m hoping it happens.

You couldn’t do a better job if you were a progressive when you drop comments like that. It’s like it’s an attempt to repel blacks from ever aligning with conservatism.
That’s not going to happen here.

I see all progs as worthless, irrespective of color.
So I’m not impressed when DC blacks, who are most definitely voting left-wing, are characterized as ni$$ers, as if they are any worse than any other prog.

    Prog is the sufficient epithet.

  12. BFH and MJA…what you said needed to be said. Bravo. Why does anybody want to condemn an entire group for what a few of them do? We need all the conservatives that can be convinced that conservatism is the right way.

I make an exception only for perverts. They are sick and we don’t want them.
